Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Can someone explain how S&D works? Inside details

We all get the fact that staffing is a black box for 90% of the org and a non concern for the 10% hi-pos( no comments on how they are chosen)

what can an ordinary employee do to get into some high visibility roles? who has the most power in the process? Supervisor? N+1? Discipline manager?

Just some inner workings knowledge would help level the playing field a bit..or atleast make it clear its not worth it if it really depends on bootlicking and arsekissing the discipline manager etc.

@v4+1jp46t5rs it’s nearly impossible for someone outside to intervene and the current set up. It will always be one person’s word against the other, even when the supervisor has a track record of bad behavior.

No one wants to work in S&D and then they make people do it who are terrible fits. See GP S&D mgr, for example.

To poster with bad supervisor-this is the time to go friends who are in a position to help. Another supervisor or someone in S&D you trust. They could go to bat for you. Most sups only stay two years so you might be able to wait it out.

What can I do if my supervisor has communicated they don’t intend to represent me well and don’t believe in me (meaning won’t advocate for good next assignments)? Is there someone in HR or S&D to talk to for help or is my only choice to resign?

The Staff & Disappointment process works like Match.com except you don’t get to choose your own dates, your parents (aka supervisors) do it for you. First, you’re put on a list where other supervisors scroll through, looking for someone who fits their criteria. If no one wants you, you stay where you are, like a profile with no interests. But if someone does pick you, you get to move—as long as the outgoing supervisor decides they don’t need you anymore. 💔

S+D will implement job postings and give up their hidden 100% control of each position 1 year after forced ranking abandoned.

Geoscience is no better than reservoir- at least the reservoir DM was a RE. The last couple of years the geoscience DM was someone who came up from IT and has been sending specialty skills like operations to the BTC with no mentoring or oversight.

BTEC is full of women leaders that know nothing but exxon BS and forms. The whole company is staffed by incompetent leaders. I know now why the morale is so low.

I love this question. This is a fair question that no one can really answer from LT or S&D. Now you will get a lot of word speak on what you can do but there is nothing in concrete. If your an inner looper you have no need to ask this question. That side conversation has been done and you’re good. Again for the folks who want to learn and work. This is not the place for you. This is a stepping stone. You get in with your LT without compromising yourself and can tolerate your weasely team mates you can make some money here. Enjoy

You are looking to move up in an organization that is not growing and has need for very few people at the top to run their moribund legacy businesses. Even at the top, there are so few real decisions to be made that the senior execs are just LARPing their way through life.

Sure, someone has to fill those jobs at the top, but don’t look for a logical merit based process to get there. If you want a mid staff level career, you are in the right place. If you want to grow and move up, you need to look elsewhere.

You see we are primarily an upstream business in that most of our profits come from the upstream. By far. And we do such a great job there is no one the chairman trust to run the upstream. In fact he chose someone with zero upstream experience. S&D is that good

Your manager must be your advocate else you go nowhere or continued lateral moves.

It doesn't work.
There was recently a sales role come available that S&D said there was no one internally that wanted it or has the skillset. So, the role was posted externally. Immediately folks with interest and the right skills from within the company started coming out of the woodwork and asking for the role.

It depends on the DM. The Reservoir function tends to favor women since the discipline manger is a woman…she is known to ask for picking female candidates for positions they are not suited for. Like it or not thats how it works, wait for such people to retire is all.
