Thread regarding Charles Schwab Corp. layoffs

We didn’t listen

Layoffs are about politics and wages, not talent. Speak up? You’re on the list. Good people were kicked out after cloud, XaaS, third party integration, and confidential data outside our control warnings. Now? Industry breaches. Compromises. Remind everyone that Menace, Tiny, Says, Rabama and Circumcised focused more on silencing professional warnings and not locking doors.

@vd Ha ha! Making strategic decisions. Just look up the credentials of MDs on LinkedIn. Many do not even have any higher education.

@tw You are obviously not a manager, and maybe not even at Schwab. Everyone knows that is works the opposite way. Schwab is not an "up or out" company. In fact, it celebrates people for their tenure more often than for their achievements. Just look at the screens on the walls. Schwab wants people to stay in their positions and become experts. That way you lock people in and make it easier to keep salaries down.

@11e I had a service company manager who was a complete nut case. He was fighting for an EB-1C visa, got an opportunity for Canada, and after going there, would constantly ask if I had come to the office or not.
Hopefully the new USCIS memo sends him to India for 5 years for processing and denies it after that.
Red Flags of Toxic Managers

They come from India and do their post-graduation
If they fail to secure a position there, they do multiple attempts
They get through connections - find out who hired them as they probably know each other
They are in debt in USA and India, due to which they become even worse

Don't get entangled... keep a safe distance

@vd

When you treat "lower level" people like sc-m, it is no wonder that they do not want to put in the effort. You are no better than anyone else. We all die at the end and you can go through your life being a decent human being to others, or only be concerned about your own well-being. Lower-level is a terrible thing to say. This company would not exist without those that are rolling their sleeves up and working. Many years ago, this place was much more concerned about its principles and people, and it is reflected in how we grew and our stock price. With the stock at $84, clearly YOUR strategic direction and amazing guidance have not done us a good service. #terriblepeople

@vd Do you even work here? We retitled almost all PLs as MD years ago.

@v2 "whether your MD likes you or not." So obviously you are a lower level person, a Sr. Manager or Manager probably and from the wsy you look at things you will never go further. You don't get to MD level by making decisions on what you personally like. You get there by making strategic decisions. To put it in your language though, I like people who will learn to do their job with excellence then evolve into their next role so I can bring in the next person and not have to pay them a premium for refusing to grow and move on. So I guess, yes, if I see you as that kind of person then I "like" you and you will be safe.

@tw g8b8m8. That’s why hundreds of those laid off went on to better positions elsewhere, including CTO, CIO and CRO. Talent is walked constantly here.

@tw I've been here since the early 2000s, and the #1 reason I have seen people get laid off is because of office politics and whether your MD likes you or not. While not 100%, plenty of talented people have been let-go because of opinion differences.

I've been here 19 years and saw many layoffs during that time and the number one factor for getting cut in every case has been the lack of value add. Talented people don't get laid off so stop deluding yourself. If you think you can stay in the same role year after year getting a meets expectation rating and be insulated from layoffs then you are sorely mistaken. If you think you can get an exceed expectations for being good at the same job year after year and be immune from layoff you are also mistaken. We want people who can progress to more and more responsibility, leaving their current role after a few years so the next generation of leaders can get the experience. During normalization, I have consistently fought my conterparts on pay increases and excessive bonuses for my own people who failed to grow and thought that getting another year of tenure somehow earned them a pay increase and hefty bonus. Not if I can help it.

Those in charge never get blamed. Almost like there’s an island of protection.

Wanna be upset? Realize some of them got millions in bonus. We got RTO and raises less than inflation.

We once feared being on the WSJ front page, which motivated us to improve availability and security. It’s simpler to make the Journal complicit.

Agree layoffs are not about talent. Folks who are in boss good books survive:-)
I know one of the Indian director who fabricated resume and got job survived layoff and this director is extremely rude and there few complaints on this director. This person is not even worth to be a manager
