Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

delayering

The "new" buzz word: delayering. So far I have only seen an effect on the "bottom" people/layer, which of course is indeed a layer.

So, we remove the bottom layer, then the supervisors become the new bottom layer, but ... who are they going to supervise, what will be their "span of control", the other new buzz word?

Finally, my favourite buzz: "take care of one another". I can relate. Not because it has been launched as a nice catch phrase, but because who I have always been and always will be. Don't need DW & Co to tell me how to be a decent human being!

As has been shown repeatedly, LT and ELT need instructions on how to appear to be decent human beings.

Every manager/supervisor/VP needs to be an individual contributor, too. We dont need someone to manage us (good people dont need much managing). We need more coordinators. Salaries for supervisors and managers should be lower than for engineers and geologists. It would be much more productive place, and much less poisonous.

Supervisors will go back to being individual contributors.

I actually haven’t heard them saying the word “delayering” over here in the states. Maybe that word hasn’t caught on yet.
Perhaps that buzz word is more prevalent where you are in Europe or Canada.

I reflect on the fact that Woods identified the human redundancy remedy was to be sorted out by local management. It definitely sounds like delayering will occur below the local management level. The guy is a genius.
