Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Dell RTO News

https://www.theregister.com/2024/02/03/dell_return_to_work/

"It’s clear from the details I’ve seen that this is a way of thinning the herd," our source said. "Folks who live a few hours away from the office will have to go into an office and if they do not, they have to sign up to a remote contract with the tacit understanding that being remote is career limiting."

No wonder the US population is crashing. At this rate the US better invite as many immigrants as possible to become citizens. Corporate America and non-stop government funded bailouts (supported by both sides) have destroyed any hope for raising child outside of a cold day care dump 60 hours a week.

SMH…you shouldn’t be WFH AND taking care of a child… you should be WORKING. No wonder RTO is being pushed. I’ve WFH for over 14 years for Dell and have no office near me…so the yahoos that take advantage of WFH are what ruins it for all.

you can always put child up for adoption if it is too much for you. You must return to the office at all costs

no one forced you to have babies and buy houses

love how you are trying to shirk responsibility and blame others for your poor life choices

Imagine you had a baby in 2022 because you could afford the child care with WFH flexibility. Then in a short year told to get back to the office. Now you’re scrambling for child care waiting list. Plus paying for said care.

@twv+1qTzeXVs not to mention if this was standard fifteen years ago would have bought at a much lower price / etc. The housing appreciation has skyrocketed.

It would cost ~5500K a mo to buy a home with same amenities/schools/etc close to the Dell Campus vs the $2500 a mo I pay now. So, essentially a 36K year added expense (not to mention moving expenses, wear and tear on car, increased food costs, less time for workouts) all so I can go to a building with sub par tech to sit on Teams calls with all my neighbors on Teams calls at the same time and witness what some humans can do to a toilet.

And pull kids out of their schools and spouse has to change jobs as well.

No thanks.

@ahd+1qTzeXVs is a miserable soul. Project much? Dell is breaking an over fifteen year promise to many great employees. They stayed at Dell because of the flexibility, etc. If forced to return to the office/move/relocate and change their lives because someone in an ivory tower decides it, then the promise and trust is broken and they will look at other options in the market.

They don't pay enough to live near the office so people moved further away. Sad.

i dont want to find a new job. all i want is to be able to do my own thing whilw working at home. if you dont bother me and leave me alone then i can do that. this RTO just makes it impossible to do my own thing as im forced into a Dell facility. let me quiet quit at home doing my 2 hours of work per day. is that too much to ask?

Older workers have family obligations (elder care), kids in school, etc. They sacrificed other options because Dell told them WFH and Remote was here to stay (from even before the pandemic).

Single and childless workers have far more flexibility to move or take up a commute.

It's not the thinning of the herd.
It's far cheaper to pay out severance than sit by and hope the right people will quit.

Most people will just quiet quit until they find a new job.

The point on older worker is very contradictory. In the same logic, most older worker probably worked in Dell for a very long time and used to going into office 3+ days a week way before covid. They probably don't care about WFH, used to going to office most of their lifes, worked super hard without questions, and probably enjoy the human interaction before retiring into lonliness. Pretty sure its the younger ones and new to workforce that will feel bad about this, because they only know work with WFH to them.

More:

“” Older workers with established community ties are said to be less inclined to undertake long commutes or to change living arrangements to meet corporate demands, and thus tend to resign more often than younger, less attached, less costly colleagues.

Our source further suggests that Dell expects such attrition and isn't prepared to enforce its RTO mandate. "Offices are too small and the new locations are serviced offices with no way of tracking employees coming and going because they are not locations where Dell badges work," we're told. “”
