Here's the thing about "low performers". As you get older, you automatically become "sr" or "staff" plus get yearly raises. Time makes you more expensive. It becomes a lot easier to justify cutting that expensive person, by saying "sr or staff should be walking on water".

Time will push a great engineer closer and closer toward the exit door. I did 4 decades in engineering, and I saw a significant number of my coworkers end up taking unplanned retirement. Fortunately when I was shown the door, I was already at a good retirement age. Many others are not so lucky.

Young folks considering a career in engineering might want to keep this in mind. The career might not be as long as you would have wanted.
