Thread regarding Teradata Corp. layoffs

No raise for you!

It was just announced that the Teradata ELT, in their infinite wisdom (or more accurately lack of wisdom), decided unanimously to forgo merit increases (salary adjustments) for employees this year so that that money can go to hire new AI-based experts. My guess is that this really means using the money to hire more VPs and SVPs and fund those salaries with raises that should go to existing employees. Never mind that everything keeps going up in cost, and Teradata insists on charging their customers CPI to keep up with inflation. It's pretty obvious that they don't care about your salary keeping up with inflation.

At this point it doesn't matter who they get rid of...the writing is on the wall...

@1h6 I'm leaning towards saying you're the deadwood that we need to get rid of. You think what you are doing is important but in reality you're trash and you need to own this. Teradata knows what it is doing

@n8 Bulls#&t response. The harder you work and sacrifice at this company, the less you get. There is a special circle of people who constantly get shoutouts and accolades in engineering and it isn't those producing sellable code.

Every company will be toxic, broke and trash given enough time. This place is different though. Not just gravity but full steam downhill. Look mommy no brake and beer in sippy-cup. Proud of you.

@16h Family first, blood and chosen. Teradata’s leadership gets it. The ELT are shepherds making the hard calls, like Abraham with the kn--e: sacrifice for the greater promise. (Genesis 22)
The cuts? “He prunes every branch that bears fruit so it bears more.” (John 15:2) Dead wood gone, vine stronger, fruit exploding.
To those pruned: may you find still waters somewhere. Not everyone’s forged for the furnace. (Psalm 1, Daniel 3)
God bless SM. God bless the faithful remnant still standing. We overcome.
Keep winning.

@103 If Teradata could actually attract top talent, they wouldn't need to steal money that was earmarked for employee raises. They are desperate.

Having been layed off by Teradata several years ago. (The decision was ridiculious and likely illegal) I've had the opportunity to work at a couple of market leading businesses. I can assure you that NOBODY is considering Teradata. Many like Snowflake but even this is slowing down. Googles new AI is able to create and maintain pipelines with entire GCP environments. It doesnt even need data to be structured in any way. The just need access to storage or a connector. What this means is everything stays onprem in cheap storage + Gemini does all the the rest. When you see what other businesses are doing its obvious that Teradata has no chance.

@128 so you’re saying if you’re desperate with no options, then it’s a good place to be while you find something better. That, I can believe.

@11s You're delusional buddy. Some people have a mortgage and kids to feed, are you saying that letting the bank take your house and your kids starve is better than working for Teradata? This is an excellent environment to be in with tons of respect, but perhaps you're not worth working here. Let the grownups work, I'll take your house for a fraction of what you paid when you're foreclosed on.

@zm it’s called researching a company before you commit. People look at reviews of companies from a lot of different websites and yes The Layoff too to get a more realistic picture of what working at that company is like. Why would you want to go from one declining company to another or a toxic environment to another. It’s called common sense. You say people can’t turn down jobs in this job market, I know people who have been out of work for awhile who have turned down jobs because they did their research and respect themselves enough not to go into another toxic environment. I turned down many jobs myself because I researched the companies and the financials and reviews were bad especially if they had a lot of activity on layoffs.

Every conversation I have about work
Where do you work?
Teradata.
Haven't heard of it.
Have you heard of Snowflake?
Yes.
We're a competitor.

FANNG indeed.

@103 Right. That’s why people all over the globe casually mention Teradata in their conversations about Amazon, Apple, Google, etc. “Hey Jerry, have you heard about the great work they’re doing over at… Teradata? Industry leader in… nothing.” You’d make a great CEO — you talk a lot about something you know nothing about.

No one will refuse a job in this market. No org will find it difficult to hire a more than competent person, not even DMV. To think teradata cannot hire because of comments in this group is funny and SAD

@tj you know I think IHeartVantage is a clown but I've worked with SS and he's a genuinely nice guy to work with, if you're talking about the director of engineering. I didn't get a raise this year but I don't think that SS is a bad guy. He's just a director there isn't much he can do

I think the troll and positivity posts are coming from SS and SR as an effort from corporate to keep potential new hires from seeing what is really going on at TD because it’s hurting their ability to hire. Instead of lying, why not fix the problems with the company so that you don’t have to combat negative posts? You can put lipstick on a pig, but it’s still a pig. New hires have a right to know what they’re getting into.

@me again if you are actively driving excellence you'll get your annual cost of living adjustment. SS recognizes excellence and rewards those driving the mission. If you find yourself fearing off shoring or AI it might be your skills are lacking and perhaps you shouldn't be in engineering, this is clearly not for you. You can go rot at a defense contractor

No standard of living raise, insurance goes up, do more work, faster, better, with less people. And train ai and offshore to do your job so TD can just let you go. That's the culture. So to the employee getting a raise, zero respect for your attitude. Some of us are doing our jobs and the jobs of others. Many of us have teams where resources are cut and we are carrying the load for everyone. But it is thankless if you are in the U.S. and work for TD. Tired of the assumption that we don't work hard or smart. That is purely a case by case basis.

one thing we can hope to see is - a jump in stock price which might fill the gap of this raise. Assuming rest of the metrics come in favour of TD.

And they expect us to churn more because we have access to AI? Talk about moving the goal post!
And dont even get me started on the toxic work culture that has creeped in over the past few months. Would be a better option to tolerate that a company which actually pays their employees well.

They did this a couple of years ago also...seems to be a very limited playbook...RIF's, stagnant pay, and increasing PIP's...maybe no raises but you can bet the ELT will be getting stock!

@b0 not those who're doing their work my DOE SS fights for his people who are getting stuff done my complaint they are never in the office. But he's an excellent leader and I think he's a beacon of leadership within Teradata. Everyone should strive to be like him and get work done if not enjoy your pay with no raise

I guess the acquisition of Stemma didn’t pan out on the AI front so now they have to punish the employees for management’s poor decisions. The employees are always punished.

@ap Sure you are buddy. Everyone in the company has to go without a raise but you. Because you’re so amazing. And a terrific team attitude. How could they not hold you up as a shining example of what all employees should be? Ge-z, you must be insufferable to work with. Your coworkers will rejoice when your number is called.
