Thread regarding UnitedHealth Group Inc. layoffs

Was just hired here!

Was offered a job with UHG/Optum and now Im really second guessing leaving my current job. Its a WAH review position. Am I being carless taking it considering the layoffs Im looking at? I don't get why they are hiring if they are laying off?! Also is it really that micromanagy? How so? So sorry to all those that were laid off. I was about 7 years ago and definitely do not want to join a company where it seems to be part of the culture.

I have had 13 different managers in the past 17 years. The initial ones were competent, but the last few have no idea what they are doing. Now, to become manager, it is who you know and how well you kiss their a**.

Actually, the people who weren't RIF'd for poor performance, were tenured employees with higher salaries. At least that is from my observance. It would make absolute sense why newer, lower-paying wage employees would replace those who were let go.

If you already started, then stay. If you've not yet given your notice at your other employer, then stay there. Layoffs are part of the UHG culture. It never ends. Profits are all the company worries about.

Just like every other company in any other industry insert name here. For the past 14 years they have been constant flux. every 6 to 9 mos new manager and or new organization shuffle. After a while you wont notice. They are so large one arm that they dont need they downsize while they build up a new business unit for some other function they need. Once you arrive you will be evaluated if you belong to the high potential . cool kids, ego massage club. Negotiate for the highest salary you can at the start since once you here good merit increase will never happen again they top out at 3% annually if that. They play the bonus game each year to eliminate the compounding of merit increases on the books as a liability over time. All depends on the current situation you are running from.

I have worked here 25 years. They have layoffs all the time. Sometimes dribs and drabs sometimes one fell swoop.

I have seen layoffs for many reasons. Consolidation of roles and responsibilities, automation of processes through technology, etc. Sometimes they take advantage of a layoff to get rid of poor performers - especially those with poor attitudes. Which is better than getting fired for poor performance and not getting any severance.

Edit, and strike out to above reply post ID: @sry+1ohuah7U.
I was typing too fast and meant to put unsure if insider trading is going on. I don’t know for sure. I’m just repeating what I saw on a stock website. I’m sure the layoffs are not correlated.

this company has layoffs every year and every few years they are massive. I wouldnt leave a secure role for this place. 1-2% pay increases on average? no training? managers rotate out frequently. leadership that just has lots of letters after their names and are fired after only a few years? How about the ones that go and start up a small company that will be bought by united? Thats always a funny occurrence. Also, all the lawsuits and fines from the gov for their anti-employee stance. Reduced benefits every year.

United still needs to fill critical roles with talent. Which is why they need you. The budget and plan for the area you were hired is most likely unrelated to the affected teams.

It is not unusual for companies to hire while also doing layoffs. Those layoffs maybe related to cost cutting decisions made months ago. Or it could be an effort to reduce overhead and/or inefficiencies.

I would avoid giving yourself an anxiety crisis by focusing on things you cannot control.

Yep. I wouldn’t if I were you. Insider trading is going on. You can see it during risk analysis. Meaning the big guys are pulling out think that speaks for itself. Thousands of people were just let go. Site isn’t for the bitter. It’s a major stock risk.
