Thread regarding Occidental Petroleum Corp. layoffs

Layoffs in general......

Layoffs do happen often in this industry, but right now is especially bad for finding a new job. If you think there are layoffs coming start putting out the resumes and making connections now. I know people that have been looking for work for a year now, and they all say hiring is slow on the open market, and the best way to get a job is through your own network and making the right connections ahead of any layoffs. I am hearing stories of people applying for hundreds of jobs and not even getting a sniff of interest. If you have a good paying jobs with benefits keep it and start looking while you have a job. That has always been the advice people have given me, but it seems like it is more true now than ever. Good luck for those looking in this current environment.

Having a job lined up before you quit your job is a fundamental concept for any adult. You can only get away with quitting without a job when you decide to retire.

@sr+1kks4j6b5 - I am having the same issue finding a job. I left Oxy on my own and had planned on taking a break and then finding something. Well, that is not working out now due to slow or no hiring at all. My advice to anyone at Oxy wanting to leave is have your next job lined up, and start as soon as possible to make sure the offer is not taken back after you resign from Oxy. I guess I will be looking a little longer, or this might be the end of the line job wise in my skills area for oil and gas. Either way it is on me for leaving Oxy, so at least I can live with that.

Former employee here, Oxy has been relatively safe lately. I regret leaving cause I got laid off from the other company and the job market su-ks…

If you haven't been networking for your entire career, starting now is too late. The professionals I've seen that win the game are by them knowing people at other companies who pull them in. Hoping that lightning strikes or a headhunter pulls a rabbit out of the hat is dangerous. If you are technically competent, Oxy has a desk for you.
