Thread regarding Solventum layoffs

Here come the Bobs

So I had cause to re-watch Office Space over the weekend. The studio released this movie in 1999. It focuses on the corporate absurdities that permeated cubicle life in the late 1990s, with the lead-up to Y2K as a backdrop.

I’ve seen the movie countless times and still find the story of the Bobs—two consultants hired to reduce headcount—hysterical, although the last seven years of hired consultants and annual layoffs is a bit too much art imitating life.

What struck me this time was a throwaway line I hadn’t noticed before. The main characters work for a company named Initech—which, they explain, is a made-up word created by smashing innovation and technology together. Sound familiar?

So the “innovative” naming that made us all Solvers became part of cinematic history over 25 years ago. Make no mistake, folks: these leaders of ours are not bringing anything new. We talk about AI and the positions it will eliminate, but with this crew of senior leaders, we could replace them with a Magic 8-Ball that simply says, “Hire consultants and restructure.” That seems to be their cure for anything that ails us.

Happy Thanksgiving all.

@sg How many MILLIONS were wasted on a "brand name" - this is almost as bad as Desi paying millions for a company called Imation in 1996, which was nearly bankrupt in 10 years.

SOLV had a chance - if the new CEO had stiff-armed a frail 80+ old guy who decided he could turn around a company that just needed to be separated from 3M.

Just pull the plug on SOLV and let it dissolve into 3 or 4 spins. And the guy with "newfound" hair to his yacht for 40 million.

PWC already has been at Solventum. That is where the job cuts came from.

@OP even the Magic 8 ball is right some of the time. Bryan and his cronies like Heather couldn't even make money if they owned the only oasis in central Sahara and a bunch of herdsmen showed up with gold and thirsty camels.

Don't forget stealing the logo from Sai360 (EHS WIMS) and rotating it 90 degrees.

SOLVE and MOMENTUM = SOLVENTUM is a joke. What problems are being solved for the customers when you lay off the very people with expertise? Check out the stock price under Bryan. Where's the momentum? This naming (and the millions 3M paid consultants to come up with it) is as comical as Imation in the mid 90s 9I forget what the IM stood for but the ation was for Innovation, something Imation never demonstrated or was always 2 years behind the competition).

A friend worked for a huge food company in the 1990s. They hired consultants to job shadow people in sales to see what they really did. It was explained that they were just looking for external ideas on how to improve how work gets done with the same people. What happened? The company outsourced all the jobs to a broker, which paid 20% less and skimpy health care coverage. Forget the same of the 3rd party that 3M uses to outsource work, but the same effect. We want you to do the same job with the same dedication and long hours - for 20% less and lousier benefits!

Funny you mention the 1990s, that's when Nelson Peltz made hundreds of millions turning around Snapple, which gave him the funding and the brilliant idea to turn his interests toward "turning around" companies in industries that he has no idea about (DuPont, SOLV). Not sure how much he is really calling the shots from his yacht, but Bryan is weak-kneed to take orders or ethically compromised for taking 40 million to trash this great business.

If we see Bryan bringing in Kearney, then we know to hide in the foxholes and wait out the next haircut.

What a sad stinking mess this company has become!
