@mkgq+1k7cSm8r a layoff could also hurt the stock price, by indicating that Alphabet leadership is bearish on the future.

Brown/Yellow hiring bar?

I swear most of the commenters here aren't Googlers, since it seems apparent that very few on this forum would clear the hiring bar.

sales force laying off 8,000.
google will layoff at least twice that amount

Really? Your proof that Google will have layoffs is that a different, poorly-run company is having layoffs?

@mkgq+1k7cSm8r why? Because some "activist investor" who has barely 0.1% of the company says so?

Larry & Sergey still have controlling vote.

They have to layoff to help the stock improve.

Layoffs confirmed by VP. Can not add more to avoid doxing.

Even gave @OP an extra week, and no further information. Really doesn't seem like this "rumor" was submitted in good faith.

This rumor is unsubstantiated. Note that it is not necessary for layoffs for happen for this rumor to be retrospectively substantiated -- this is about establishing the basis of this rumor, and if it was actually based on something. It doesn't appear to be, and the fact that a layoff may happen in the future would be just coincidence.

Matter closed.

@4sax

My motivation here is simple: To get a feel for potential layoffs and other things that can impact people's jobs and livelihoods. I had presumed that was your motivation, but I'm shocked by your response to @3tgt:

If you’re so confident then why are you even on this board?

I never said I was absolutely confident. In fact my precise words were "there have been quite a few 'rumors' that turned out to be 100% false." I did not state that all rumors on this site are false. I merely observed that this site's rumors aren't always true. Kind of bizarre that you are insisting that I leave. If you were sincere, why would you be so defensive?

I’ve been watching companies I buy stock in since 2017 and most of the time the posts are just like the ones here.

I've been on this board for a while too. Yes, I'd say the majority of rumors turn out to be true. But there is a lot that is suspect, some that turned out to be untrue, and some that are simply impossible claims. But again, there was no need for you to get defensive.

And the layoffs DO happen, Big companies have to document all terminations for legal reasons and it takes awhile. The details don’t get out but there is a general sense that something like a layoff is happening and that is what you see now.

No one is saying layoffs don't happen. No one is saying there isn't a process. And personally in my cost center, there isn't a sense of layoffs happening. In fact we have open headcount.

If you were being sincere, why are you being so defensive about people trying to get more confirmation?

As per @3syj, lets see something more substantive by Monday the 19th. Thank you.

From an investor perspective, 11% layoffs makes sense

@1dyy+1k7cSm8r Larry and Sergey have majority voting power with their class B shares. Google/Alphabet does not "report to" Wall Street.

GSUs will be decimated, but leadership will agree that is preferable to mass layoffs.

@3nlx I have been on this site a long time, trust me when I say that there have been quite a few "rumors" that turned out to be 100% false. And other boards on this site have had people ask for confirmation for their various rumors.

Yes, people post false stories for trolling. Heck that Forbes 6% cut story has been debunked, and that wasn't an anonymous crank on this board.

@3hhx don't know about you but my org has been drowning in work. In no way are we overstaffed.

Lists are already made up; for big companies it takes months to prepare for layoffs

Google's CEO Sundar Pichai won't promise layoffs aren't coming. Insider's Hugh Langley reports on a tense all-hands inside Google, where employees once again pushed CEO Sundar Pichai to comment on the possibility of layoffs. His response was that it's "tough to predict the future."

On February 7th, when Google announces quarterly report, they will announce the restructuring cost (severance packages cost for layoffs); it will be in the billions

Google is overstaffed and Wall Street is demanding better cash flow for the stock to come back: what is the better way to reduce expenses by doing restructuring (layoffs)?

Investors think Google engineers are overly compensated compared to the rest of the industry

CEOs look at the restructuring at Twitter to reduce expenses, as an example and think a portion of this can apply to Google

I’ve been on other companies layoff threads and I’ve never seen someone demand substantiation before. What exactly is substantiation, most people aren’t going to post highly sensitive and confidential facts like that in detail. It’s amazing to me how folks seem to be in denial that they like many companies may be in this position. I don’t see what the benefit would be to stir up completely false rumors.

This might be someone posting to stir up trouble.

@OP, please respond by Monday, December 19 with some way for employees to verify this claim. Otherwise, the claim will be deemed unsubstantiated.

and then imagine making 20% less in profits in a recession, and then deciding the headcount cuts ...... it is going to be brutal
