Thread regarding 2U Inc. layoffs

I don't plan to be here much longer

I know I'm not the only one who's decided they've had enough. I've already started looking and as soon as a moderately attractive opportunity presents itself I'll be gone. I've found ways to convince myself to stay for years despite everything, but not anymore. I deserve better than this. We all do.

Sometimes being paid to go is the only thing that can help you make the move. For folks like you who want to leave anyway, it could be a huge win. Best way to make more money or move to higher positions quickly is a job move.

Litigation doesn’t work in a mass layoff. It is only useful if you are being fired for “cause”- and then hardly so unless you have proof of discrimination. Collect all that info if you want- as it might help you speak to your strengths and accomplishments for a job search… but even people who are on FMLA can be let go in a mass layoff- without recourse. Better to spend your time looking for something else or decide you are willing to be both feet in and be ready for whatever comes (that could include a severance). Don’t burn your bridges of possible recommendations from supervisors/colleagues after a layoff by not at least continuing to do your job well until you find something else or the lay off comes. Or - do what you will and limit your future choices. This isn’t an admonishment in any way- just reality especially if you want to stay in ed tech. It’s a very small world at the high levels and you could really do yourself a disservice by not at least trying to maintain relationships until you find your next thing. But of course if you feel there is discrimination based on you being a part of a “protected class” (that is happening now or in the past - not bc of a layoff- plenty of amazing people have already been let go)

@rux+1i3cWroE Everyone who hasn't yet should be pulling their personnel documents: performance reviews, interactions, emails, praise, etc. Do your due diligence and have an employment lawyer ready in case you feel you're wronged.

* VERY IMPORTANT *

The company knows there are a lot of people waiting on their severance package and are now looking for reasons to terminate you. Severance packages are going to cost 2U a lot of money, so you can imagine in this crunch they will try to find a diversion. Document EVERY interaction with your management team, whether positive, negative, or neutral. Litigation isn't fun, but is necessary. Don't let them get away with canceling you and pretending you never contributed a substantial amount of your life for them. You gave a damn and now you know they never did.

stay for the severance package if you can, make them pay you to leave. if you leave on your own terms you're only helping them out by saving them more money
