Thread regarding Boeing Co. layoffs

The New Normal

Now that it appears that Boeing will NOT take the bailout, it's going to get interesting very fast. Supposedly, 70,000 VLO offers were sent out corporate-wide, meaning that they're deciding now on just how far they will cut, which will be deep. Look at the production numbers announced by Calhoun, and then think of how many fewer people it will take to produce a handful of airplanes in Everett, and a a slightly bigger handful in Renton, at least when they finally start the line again.

Someone else here got roasted for an email they saw asking "how many" to get the job done, and I think that similar emails are going out throughout the company. For example, nobody in my job category got a VLO offer, but there is no way they are going to maintain current head count, so it's seems quite logical to get an idea of exactly who is going away on the upcoming ILO/Round 1.

The "New Normal" would seem to be "Boeing Light", as envisioned by GE. Calhoun is behaving exactly as one would expect of a General Electric product, and doing the same kind of things he learned as a protege of Jack Welch. I got burned yesterday over my support for the Seattle Times editorial urging Boeing to go back to it's origins and get rid of the GE style management and dysfunctional board, and I'm wondering why?

Calhoun seems to be looking at it from purely a numbers perspective, and to a degree, that is necessary. But, the way it seems like they're going to do it is to protect the top of the organization, give a big wet and sloppy BJ to the shareholders, and slam Boeing workers and supply chain employees as the "only" way to get those precious numbers.

Wouldn't it make sense to have a CEO actually from Boeing as opposed to an outsider that only sees numbers? Sure, Muilenberg was a lifer, but he bought into the "maximizing profit" mantra too, making him more like Calhoun than not.

A re-focus on engineering, and the selection of a CEO obsessed with making the best product available makes a lot more sense than what we have now, another profit over quality upper management team that treats the products we make like consumer appliances, which they are definitely not. Build the company's reputation back by once again making the best aircraft out there, not planes that need to be reworked and redesigned after they're sold, but right when they are accepted by the customer.

They need to clean house at the top and work down from there. We didn't OK the MAX..they did. We don't build c-ap airplanes like the scabs in SC, but upper management decided to take revenge on the IAM for daring to strike.

A lot of us are probably going to be gone in the near future, but Calhoun and Co. need to go first.

I appreciate the OP comment, but don’t necessarily agree. Dennis was at the helm during the Max crisis but did he make the decisions, was he really informed of all decisions on all components of the product? My guess is no. I have to think many on the program had at least thought to themselves “hey, not sure one AOA sensor is a good idea”. I feel I saw at least one public released email speaking to it. And continued problems point to an isolated BCA management problem - I’m sorry but there are A LOT of executives supporting BCA in the NW that would intervene before Dennis.
BUT My experience in BDS when Denny was the President is the culture of Yes Men/Women. No matter how asinine the expectation from on high is, it’s met with “Yeah totally dude!!!” Even requests that clearly indicate the leader is misinformed on the topic, their direct reports flat out make things up to fit a solution into the inane request, rather than simply asking clarifying questions, rather insecure bunch given how arrogant they are. Often it results in high churn, burdens functions with a need to conform to non sensical metrics or measures, and adds NO VALUE. That is just my take. I really like Dennis honestly, but I think he bred or tolerated that culture, which might be “positive”, but in a business is toxic. I’m sorry to also say some of the best engineers or technical folks really are obtuse when it comes to adding value and running a business. There is an obsession with needing to know EVERYTHING rather than focusing on value added information. There also tends to be a strong desire to cave into every customer demand that comes up (and often for free). That isn’t acceptable, this is why I believe we need a balanced leader who understands the business, not just an engineer. I don’t have an assessment on DC yet, but he isn’t going to treat Boeing as if it was Macy’s. Best of luck to all.

Selling bonds is the same as a bailout but slimy and devious? Can you read what you write? I know you definitely don’t understand what you write. Good grief, you’re actually rooting for a government bailout... or maybe you just want everyone to be fired.

Sellings bonds is essentially the same as a .gov bailout, except in a very slimy and devious manner he can get around the "strings" and cost cut to his little heart's delight. Hidden in CARES act, the FED will backstop this 25Billion junk loan bonanza. He's a GE indoctrination camp graduate for sure but also he seems well versed in the "Chicago style" of crooked management. Not a moral or inspiring leader but he's surely got some "B@LL$" in his little sack to pull off this stunt.

Not a troll. Yes, I think my job code somehow got left out because what I do is no more essential than any other Boeing function.

"Today's corporate world is move faster, we'll work the bugs out later."

That is the basic high level definition of "agile" development. It's what Boeing has been pushing for years now.

It is a software term. It works well for video games and apps, problem is no one gets k–led by those things.

In aircraft you have one chance to get it right.

Speaking from experience, when companies are in trouble they generally search for an executive that has experience in reducing operational costs. Hal Lawton was brought in from Home Depot/Ebay to destroy Macy's. He did exactly what Calhoun will do to Boeing. Hal Lawton took his golden parachute in December . He outsourced anyone making a living wage and destroyed our internal operations.

You are correct in that if Boeing is going to succeed the "Old way", which is to produce a quality product , you need someone with knowledge and experience at the top. My fear is that they do not care at this point. Doing things right costs more money, bottom line. Today's corporate world is move faster, we'll work the bugs out later. Our days of integrity in a product are gone. Disposable world, people included.

I salute you all at Boeing . You are a talented group of individuals that should be proud of the job you have done on the production lines. You have held the Northwest economy up. Thank you.
I wish you all the best of luck!

You must be in tooling
Tooling job code did not come up but it was a mistake, but I think it might be to late to offer the VLO now since the decision is due tomorrow night I think or is it Monday?
You can still call workplace or whatever it’s called and ask if a tooler is interested.

LOL about the Calhoun and Co.
