Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Is Dell targeting older workers?

Everyone that I know that got WFR'd was older.
Was their retirement "runway" a factor?
Are they discriminating against employees based on age?
Is it time for another lawsuit similar to IBM/Kyndryl?

Dell HR tracks and knows the average retirement age (from Dell). Over that number (59.5)? You're likely well compensated, at a higher grade level, and have outstanding RSUs. It's a bad combination that puts a target on your back.

@rkj+1tSILeVr for you, and those asking, HR/Legal demographic filters run more than age

They always have targeted older workers but know how to game the system. They know the W.A.R.N. act to the T and avoid being called on it. More here https://legalaidatwork.org/factsheet/the-w-a-r-n-act-mass-layoffs-or-businessplant-closings/

Don't ever assume you are safe at Dell because there is always someone there stabbing you in the back, while they reach around front and tell you how wonderful you are.

100% they are, they cost more. Just remember HR is there to protect the company, not the employee. That WFR slate will be completely sanitized so that the people being let go appear to be poor performers, or the work they do is no longer relevant to the company. HR is both ruthless and brutally efficient at this process.

@hes+1tSILeVr - the older employee with the higher salary could be number 1 or 2 on that stack ranking list. They would still be the target. That has been the case with many I have seen let go.

Salary is a consideration. Suppose as a manager you have 10 people in your group and are faced with a 10% HC reduction requirement. 2 of the lowest ranked employees doing the same job are submitted to HR for consideration:

Employee ranked #9 is a 55 y/o making $135k in the U.S. and has been with the company 7 years.

Employee ranked #10 is a 30 y/o making $65k not in the U.S. and has been with the company 3 years.

Who do you think they will target for WFR?

There's something called Older Workers Benefit Protection Act, 29 U.S.C. § 623. If you are older, they notify you that you are targeted due to your age and they have to tell you the age of everyone else affected in your layoff group.

Just so everyone is aware...everytime Dell does layoffs they release a report of job Title, age, and salary range(i.e AE5, TSR3) . They do this specifically to prove their layoffs aren't aged base (or they intentionally layoff a balance to make sure they can't be sued).

Either way- that report will be part of your severance package.

Source: I have been laid off twice by Dell (once as a Dell badged and the last as EMC badged) and it has been in both reports.

I don't understand all of the downvotes on the race/gender question and not age? Seems like a completely reasonable question to ask. I still feel like the upvote/downvote behavior on this site is extremely suspicious. Don't know if it is thelayoff.com people or Dell spies.

The average age at Dell is like 50. So it’s not surprising on the age of people being laid off. There are no young people here

Not to defend them here, but wouldn't the older employees likely be making the most money, thus making them prime targets?

Could it be age and / or how many options you have yet to vest? Letting you go means save money by not having to vest and pay for options coming up next year.

More curious about race and gender than age

We know HR/Legal ran an age demographic filter, but the optics may seem otherwise.
