Inclusive Layoffs

To assist you during this transition and to ensure our layoff process is without bias, we’re fostering inclusivity throughout the entire process. For example, we endeavor to provide support and resources to women globally and individuals from underrepresented communities for U.S.-based roles.

But it isn’t equal opportunity employment, why would the opposite be true ?

For broadcom, in the spirit of inclusion, layoffs are the most inclusive event of the year. Equal opportunity unemployment

Offers will be based on those that are the most willing to have their career go down the toilet.

I don't believe you will automatically be offered the same pay if you get a BC offer. You are essentially quitting VMW and taking an offer from BC. I would not be surprised if some offers are inline with rightsizing pay. To top it off, if you don't accept the offer, you may not get the severance package.

I have a feeling that the scale of this layoff will be unapologetic and unconcerned with DEI.

Your feelings don't translate to how businesses often operate.

First, let's get the obvious out of the way. Stack Ranking is not how things are decided. Never has been. Stack Ranking is just one data point in the algorithm. The others are compensation, years of employment, physical location, career placement, team placement, etc. You may be the top-ranked employee in the entire company, but if you are 2x the compensation of the next top employee, and are the only remote person in your team, then you will be laid off.

To address the other issue in perception: a 100% merit-based ranking can often mean that underrepresented minorities are at the top. Yet, overrepresented majorities may feel like that was bias instead of merit.

Businesses also face risk of disparate impact (unintentional discrimination), and typically hold to their own internal DEI policies. We know Broadcom has DEI policies, but we don't know what they are. Nor to many BC employees, as those exist within HR.

HR and Legal have to weigh all of these aspects to make their list. We may all wish business is easy, but for multi-billion dollar global corporations it is more intricate.

If you’re a minority woman in a team of all middle aged+ men, all that matters is where you fall in the stack ranking.

"VMware’s layoff practice has been to balance the makeup of employee demographics to demonstrate non-discrimination"

All companies have to be mindful when laying people off. If it just so happens (I'm not one of the knuckle dragging anti-DEI bigots BTW, not that being anti-DEI makes you a bigot, but there are bigots on here) that mandatory dismissal disproportionately affects one group or another, then that could be grounds for legal action in many countries.

Broadcom may solve this shameful practice: VMware’s layoff practice has been to balance the makeup of employee demographics to demonstrate non-discrimination. In parallel, some of those affected were told not to worry, “you’ve been hand picked,” for a new position. “Just hang tight.” I’ve seen this play out many times at VMware. Sometimes these chosen employees got to collect severance, sometimes they slid into a new job sooner. This has been a way for the cronies to take care of one another and their mini-me’s. Consistently the chosen people look like the next generation from the same fraternity. This is one of the reasons why most of the diversity is in entry and lower level management positions. They get whacked and stay whacked. Reading comments on this site, this set of truths probably won’t be popular, but this is the harsh reality.

There is always an exception to any policy. Here in America, age discrimination is illegal but rarely punished during blatant violations that happen at big layoffs, like the one.

Highly paid senior VMW employees will be targeted for severance first and foremost.
