Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

How do you maintain a positive work environment amid constant layoffs?

If somebody has managed to do it, please let me know. Our morale has never been this low and it's getting worse. It's just a horrible work situation all around.

A certain level of alcoholism does help grease the skids. and..................... being old enough and prepared to not care.

that's how. cheers!

Merry Christmas and happy Hanukkah!

My whole department is miserable. They hate the management who is ruthless and cruel. Constant unrealistic expectations and lack of transparency. Oh, this isn't working.. lets move people onto new teams and cause more chaos.
It's very sad that all of us who really want to come to work, love what we do, feel like we are contributing, are now shells who show up just to get by.
I have seen a huge decline in mental health and caring.
I personally go to the gym (my Xanex), support my co-workers (because they are miserable too) and ponder if it is best to be laid off or be left behind to pick up the pieces of whats left after they let the American workforce go.
Everyone, we are all in this together, we have to do things to help our mental health daily. Pray that everyone makes it through March healthy.
For New Year's, I want a job I love to come to every day again. It's been a while.

I haven't seen a positive work environment here in about 8 years. It gets worse every day and I don't see it turning around. They will work us to the ground until we are replaced by WF India. I refuse to work extra hours. I'm not giving them anything extra because they'll give us the ax sooner rather than later.

The more I work, the less I care.

Management doesn't care about us, just that we get tasks done. They assign more work without regard to the current workload. And when we ask for their support to push back against other teams, they are nowhere to be found.

Obviously they don't really care, despite what they say. "Just shut up and dance and make me a bigger bonus" is all we hear.

Years ago, I gave up caring what corporate leadership wanted. It's a business and they will run it as ruthlessly as possible.

Therefore, I'm upskilling and waiting for the turnaround in IT hiring. It's abysmal at the moment but it'll change once rates drop and the spigots open up again. Until then I do just enough to stay off management's radar (aside from being 100% WFH) and qualify for max bonus. My direct and 2-up like me, everyone above them is the problem.

Corporate apathy is great for self-care. The irony is that when one of my parents worked here, I as a kid respected the brand. Now I refuse to tell people who I work for because the brand name of Wells Fargo is synonymous with evil corporatism.

I decided to leave a few months ago, so I have been hanging on for 401k match and bonus. Giving my notice on 2/5. I will do my best until then, but won’t get stressed out about anything, as this company is toxic and makes no difference to me in the grand scheme. It is just a job. Take care of yourself and make leaving this place in 2024 your goal.

Only worry about what you can control. Maybe that also includes working on your resume and finding another job. Try to control your own destiny instead of someone decided for you

I’ve emotionally detached from the company. I don’t read company news. I don’t attend town halls, holiday parties, DEI sessions, etc. I’ve stopped watching the stock price. 8 hours a day maximum. It’s purely transactional for me, until I quit after bonus.

You have zero control over it. Live your life, do your job. If it happens, it happens.

"How do you maintain a positive work environment amid constant layoffs"?

Very interesting question posed here. The problem lies in the fact that "maintain positive work environment" and "amid constant layoffs" are mutually exclusive actions.

It may well be that the posed question works perfectly for the audience that benefits most by it's execution (BoD's) therefore their work environment is Shangri-La while the audience that suffers most by it's execution (everyone else) feels their work environment is Dante's Inferno.

Take your pick.

Best to try not to care. I care very much for how people are treated and this care nearly drove me to dark place I don’t care to label. For my own mental health, my brain just stopped caring anymore. I just do what I can in the spheres I’m in to bring some dignity and respect to other people. It’s really all I have control over.

Yes, our leaders are likely people heavily indexed to the dark triad of personality traits and will continue to make heartless decisions that negatively impact people. I just can’t focus on that, because then I feel angry and helpless. I’m taking back what little power I have to the areas I can control, first and foremost being the reactions I choose to have.

I’m choosing not to invest my heart or emotions into this job. I’m choosing to maximize all the benefits available to me in this job. I’m choosing to focus on kindness and the good people who work here (we have a lot of them-just not at the top). I’m also choosing to explore exit strategies.

It's all about self care. Every time something triggers you negatively, no matter the severity, do something positive for yourself. Mental health walks are a given or step away to eat something healthy like an apple. Before eating anything, search for ways the French prepare it and follow their directions. It will take more time away from your desk.

My step count and apple intake is so high that I have evolved into a championship horse.

Work In Progress here. Some days are better than others. Some are a fail. For me, I’ve had to detach myself mentally and emotionally from WF. I am no longer invested in how WF performs or the progress it does/does not make. I do not initiate conversations with colleagues about how I feel about anything unless it’s a work expectation (i.e. project). I will politely respond but offer little or no personal feedback. I no longer share anything personal with higher ups and co workers. I don’t complain about how things are (or how great they might have been) because the only people that can change any of this don’t want most of us here and quite frankly don’t t care about any of
us. I do only what is necessary for work and protect myself so I am not targeted for a false Needs Improvement rating or PIP.

It’s a very sterile existence now, for me. I come to this site to read and see that I’m not alone. I sometimes share in venting here but mostly through upvotes when it resonates. It su-ks and honestly I wish it were different but it will not be with CS & company and the current BOD in charge. In fact, it will only get worse in the next year. I take heart in knowing that nothing lasts forever and in 2 years from now, it’s likely I’ll look back and think even now with this post I’ve given WF more thought and energy than it deserved.

Step 1: completely ignore anyone within 2 down of the CEO. Delete the emails, skip the townhalls, avoid the Teamworks articles and change the channel if they pop up on financial news.

Step 2: focus on your own team / work.

Almost all the negativity is coming down from the top. Ignore them. You'll be happier and it won't make a bit of difference either way when I comes to your role potentially being laid off.
