Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

People are still going into management at UP from the ranks in 2021. Why?

What do you hope to accomplish? Do you like the hours managers work? The unpaid overtime? The testing requirements? Getting called on your off days and vacations? The way you are treated on conference calls and blamed for things not in your scope? Think you will be the one to change the system? I’m curious the thought process.

Better money, easier attendance policy, flex time, generous 401k match, extra vacation, retention stocks, bonuses.

Correction. Nobody likes management not even managers. There are a few in management that try to stick it out for monetary reasons.

Bitter much!? Some people like management; some people don't move on. Be glad you have that right to choose.

xm1, most managers are middle class employees. Only the corporate superintendents, VP’s, and above are getting rich. Many managers have lost their jobs due to PSR. They don’t like what’s going on anymore than you do. This isn’t just a railroad problem as downsizing became a corporate trend more than 4 decades ago. There are some companies that have cut off over 30,000 employees. Many think downsizing has a long term negative effect on corporations and is only a short term revenue ploy. Hopefully the layoffs are over for now with UP, but don’t count on it. When PSR has run its course, the board and stockholders will demand another method of raising stock prices. Cost cutting will never end and the greatest expense for any company is employees, so that’s where they always look first.

Maybe it's the satisfaction of all the disappointed children when they walk their parents off property for profits...Money! Money! Money! My bonus is going to be great! Shareholders over Middle Class families!

That's because they're grandfathered in. Nobody gets it anymore because UP decided greed was more important than you. Insurance is ridiculous as well.

Some managers do get pensions and railroad retirement. 2 checks, maybe not in 2021. I would stop worrying about everyone else.

There are many reasons people choose to go into management. Mine was for guaranteed days off, the opportunity to move and live in different locations, and for the management pension. Everyone is different and makes decisions in their lives based on their own ambitions and desires. I enjoyed being a conductor and locomotive engineer and I also mostly enjoyed management. Every job has good and bad points and each profession has good and bad people. All management employees are not bad just like all craft employees aren’t all bad. Everyone in life is trying pretty much for the same things; to take care of our families and to be happy. Don’t knock someone for taking a different path than you chose.

If you think we didn’t get bonuses think again, that $15k deposit last month says otherwise. The stock bonuses are retention, not just as a manager even if you go back to your seniority it stays with you. Maybe they like the scheduled time off. 9 days off a month and not having to deal with an attendance policy. Maybe it’s for the enhanced 401k and ability to go at 55. Everyone has their own personal motivation, even if it doesn’t fit the juvenile narratives of this poster and some of the comments. Bash these guys all you want, talk trash for the poor job they do yada yada yada, most all of these guys and gals are just grunts trying to make the railroad world they cover a better place for you and themselves.

In sum, only a fool would enter management in 2021.

You are right; you can retire at 59, or less some people prefer two checks.

Several of you are mistaken. There is no longer a pension for managers.

I guess that means it will be one less person in management, no one’s forcing you.

I'm not going to argue with somebody online; There are several reasons why people are in management, it’s not for a good time.

Because those people were picked on in High School, and now want to have a “little” power

Correct you don’t even get a pension as a new manager. And a bonus? Ha.

Also part of bonuses are a lot of times is in stocks with an option. Basically you sometimes have a time period before that stock can be collected. A companies way to keep you on.

They already get RR retirement either way. There is no true pension anymore. It is now an enhanced 401k match. And they can go even before 59 but going any earlier than 60 is at a reduced rate.

You can retire at 59 if you’re in management didn’t mean to leave that out.

It’s not about changing the company; it’s about Railroad retirement, a bonus, and a manager's pension for some.
