Thread regarding Hess Corp. layoffs

Reality

Monday will be a tough day for a lot of good people at Hess including myself, that’s the reality when over 70% of Hess Houston will get severed. We can be negative, or we can focus on the positives and what’s next. I’m thankful for a long career at Hess in which I worked some great projects, with some great people, in some cool places. It doesn’t matter whose name is on the building, the people are what makes a company. I hope all my fellow Hess family can have a relaxing weekend and reflect on the positives you’ll take away from Hess. Monday will come and we’ll all have a new beginning - in retirement, in a new company, or in CVX. Stay positive, don’t let this event define your career.

@r0 I’ve had something lined up for a while now so made more sense to wait and cash out. Sounds like you don’t have a lot of connections or not confident in your abilities and felt pressured into jumping ship.

Hess was a great company to work for (12) years for me until Oxy bought us. I stayed around for a year & bounced. Seems everywhere I go the company changes logos.
I started with Amoco in 1997 then Bp acquired us. Then we were sold to Ineos. I left after 10 years to work for Hess. Since then I worked for DCP and now P66 owns us.
I'm in I/e and know everything so it's not hard to find work.
Good luck to all & keep learning.

@107 would agree with this. Who needs Hess people when CVX XOM wrote the book on deepwater? I could see maybe keeping a few key folks but 100? Insanity … same with Bakken. Cut 80% go super lean, turn around FCF and then sell. Bakken is nothing more than a liability for CVX.

@s7 all almost all guyana will be axed. Hess was way over staffed compared to how chevron does OBO. And why take Hess employees when you have deep water experts in chevron?

@r5 Left on my own! Why wouldn't I follow what's going on?

@rw Not scared just proactive. Signing bonus was equivalent to the retention bonus I was offered so win, win. Being in the industry 25 plus years, I've seen this play out before and wasn't going to stick around. Best of luck.

I am in Guyana production what’s the likelihood I get axed after integration? Also have a close friend on a visa assume that means layoffs after integration

@r0

The reality is yes some people were delusional and thought they would have a role but many others wanted to cash out so waiting until the end. Sounds like you jumped because you were scared of the uncertainty which is okay.

@r0 if you got out, why are you still coming back to check this site out?! Did you leave on your own or did you get kicked out?

@OP The reality is smart people left months ago!! Why anyone stayed and waited this out is beyond me. The lure of a retention bonus that you'll likely have to live off because you won't find a job and you waited until 500 plus people will all be looking. Those who stayed because their ego drove them to believe they'd get retained deserve it. The writing was on the wall and now you act depressed and play the victim. Glad I was proactive and got out.

Most G&G or subsurface folks that are laid off with struggle with getting a new job in technical areas of oil and gas. Too many already available with very specific skills. Uncon does not require much geoscience unless you want to geo steer or do rig work in Uncon or offshore. These jobs are entry level and rotate onshore or rotate offshore. Do not plan on a traditional office job in hou, these are all moving to low cost locations in india, so the best jobs are going to be on rigs (these jobs cannot be easily migrated to India, but I am seeing a push to geo-steer from India.

Virtually all engineering jobs can move to India, so the best jobs may be on construction sites like US lng, US wind, data centers and power plants. Again mostly entry level. Do not count on 150 to 300k. These jobs are entry level 100k to 120k. New hires are 80k. It will be a parking place until higher level manager open in these companies and you prove your worth

I know geologists who have been looking for a new oil and gas position for close to 2 years since they were let go in rounds of layoffs. They've had to branch into career paths that have nothing to do with Geology, often having to take pay cuts of up to 50-70%. The job market is horrific for any geoscientist looking. All the layoffs are adding to the already saturated candidate pool and most large firms are outsourcing to India. Just look at Chevron's career page. If you have kids or relatives going to college soon, I'd suggest to let them know that the days of getting a high paying geoscience spot with a US company are gone and never returning.

@az+1k0znarms It is going to be tough in the techincal fields to find a job. It is for sure an employer's market. It is also a great chance for other companies to pick up some great hires. With the market saturated in skilled workers hopefully they will look at upgrading their staffs.

Plus Shell, Repsol, Apache recent lay offs, a lot of folks out there looking for a job, not many postings. It is hard to remain optimistic of finding a good full time job soon.

Not many oil ad gas jobs in Hou with COP/Marathon layoffs, CVX layoffs and lower uncon activity. Some openings in Midland. Most will face extended unemployment (a year or more) and geoscience/reservoir will need to change industry. Facilities can shift to petrochem/refining or wind /solar projects. IT will need to retrain in AI, because AI is going to code. HR will be replaced by AI and accounting will be in India. Retire if you can
