Pocatello Shop Shut Down

All Machinist/Electricians were furloughed today. Leaving 1 position each respectfully. This is how we win together!

Carmen and TCI are starting to do locomotive work now including repairs, servicing, fueling, etc. Get out now while you can before they force everyone out.

@4cp Still 2 managers. 1 guy came back from medical so they furloughed the bottom MSO to keep it at 9 total.

Another guy came back from medical, now they are keeping 10 MSO but looks like posting a facility maintenance job. Previous facility maintenance position was furloughed the last time they cut Pocatello locomotive in half (Sept 2023). They had a worthless contractor doing "maintenance" that would either not fix anything or fix it wrong, then they would force craft employees to come in behind them and fix it or bring in another contractor to fix it correctly.

So this new facility maintenance job is for less money than the position that was furloughed back in 2023 and it also requires being the vacation relief guy.

It's been about a month since the slashing and I was wondering if you still have 2 managers to manage 9 workers and 2 others in trucks? Wish I could of have had a job like that when I was a supervisor. How in the world can they each supervise 5 1/2 workers at once? Amazing!

Do you think we could trade all our trading cards in to Jeremy for a Pocatello shop to open back up? What a sick joke they are!

@145 grampa Millennials are in their 30s and 40s at this point and have mostly gotten laid off. Your Fox News talking point don’t work here.

@140 No they would rather hire millineals that work a few days and quit , cause that makes more sense.

@qm That's not going to work FRA gets a fat check from uncle Pete and everything gets quite just like when the FRA survey suddenly stopped.

UPRR has tried to shut down Pocatello many times and it never works! Pocatello is a growing population community, which is even more of a reason to KEEP it! They need to pull their heads out....and realize Pocatello Yard needs to stay! Bring back the hard workers that have stuck with you through all the ups and downs! That have worked the over time and sacrificed time with their families for you!

@kd because the company has laborers doing 9414 inspections and building consists. They lace everything up and if the crew finds a problem when they pick up the consist, they call the craftspeople.

I would just report directly to the FRA instead of waiting to give copies. Take pictures and do whatever you think would be worthwhile to get the UP some unneeded attention. The STB is already up their backside questioning the tactics and operational ideas. By all means give copies when you can, but don't wait to do it. The so-called defect might be fixed before the FRA or whoever gets to it, so time is of the essence.

Crews need to report every defect every time, all the time, and make copies to provide to FRA and/or Congress when the defect reports "disappear"

Document, document, document.

@kr

Exactly, laborers are cheaper and every craft has been doing each other's job for so many years in pocatello that management thinks everything will run smoothly there without electricians and machinists. The unions have done absolutely nothing to stop it.

Anyone reached out to east idaho news or idaho state journal to get them to post a story about the shop shut down and furloughs?

The railroad needs more “college boys” or it won’t survive. Ya’ll know college boys are smarter, right? The 30 year guy knows nothing about running a railroad. Don’t believe me? Just ask a college boy. They have a belly full of fresh UP kool aid and they know what’s best.

@kd the laborers are cheaper and vena doesn’t care if the locomotives work right.

Why keep 9 mso’s and cut 8 craftsmen ? Any normal company would cut the laborers and keep the craftsmen.

This is what gets a CEO an Innovator of the Year award. How Progressive Railroading finds JV so inspiring means they know nothing about how the company is being run.

The wheels are quite literally falling off the RR due to lack of maintenance and yet we cut more of the folks that keep us on the rail...

This summer is going to be brutal with regards to units going down.

They kept 1 machinist and 1 electrician for road truck jobs. Cut 3 electricians and 5 machinists. Both managers got to keep their job even though there is only 11 locomotive employees at Pocatello now (9 mso's 1 road electrician 1 road machinist).

Since they kept road truck jobs they don't count it as a shop closure, so craft employees that were cut were not given an option to transfer. If they get a position at another location it would be bottom of the seniority list just like they were some random person off the street.

More too come small shops and locations to close. Managers will be trimmed at all shops by half and go on a 11-day on and 3 days off. Sudden influx of managers since combining the car dept and locomotive dept as 1.

Too many! Vena has been quietly furloughing craft workers and shuttering locations since he came back and yet there's been very little information to no information about any of it. The company is in a very sad state right now. I have a feeling Vena is going to go after even more locations. Vena hasn't made good to the investors wishes and the stock price has been struggling to go anywhere except down. The really odd part is that Vena was named innovator of the year by Progressive Railroading magazine. I wonder how much he paid that magazine for that award? How in the world can someone like Vena be awarded "innovator of the year", especially when he's quite possibly the most hated man in the industry.

How many machinists lost their jobs?

A lot of the blame can be laid right on the ibew and iam. By allowing the “emergency” forced overtime in the crafts since September they’ve just rolled over and paved the way for more of their members losing their jobs. Thanks a lot.

There won't be anything in the news about it, but the company website does show many furloughs in Pocatello. The company is doing what they've always done. They'll keep the layoffs and closures out of public view for as long as they can.
