The real talent is mostly gone

All the good employees, the ones who really mattered, left a long time ago. The ones who are still hanging around are just going through the motions (that's what I've been doing, waiting for retirement) or are basically unemployable anywhere else. The go-getters, those who care, most of them bailed years back. And I can't blame any of them.

It is all about great leadership motivating and attracting the best talent. Talent is made by great expectations, encouragement and support.

There are good people left. They have different reasons for holding on -- maybe a child in last year of school, maybe they are very introverted and are terrified to go interview, maybe they have someone in the family with health problems, who knows? But there are good people left. Please don't condemn them all.

Work here is really of low morale. Everyone looks down and not motivated at all. There is no direction at all from the Directors/VP/SVP above, except empty talks. It is really a messy situation now within the company.

The bod does want to get rid of the acelity debt (and avoid rite down) hence the spin. If acelity were a smashing success they wouldn’t be doing the spin

It's strange how short sighted the 3M board has for its strategic vision. Why spend a bo-b to acquire Acelity in 2019, only to declare the health care BG spinoff in 2022? This company is truly in a mess. No wonder the real talents have left this sinking ship.

My team lost almost all of its most talented members in less than a year. We are left for managers people who have very little experience but think they are experts and someone brand new to 3M. One of the main reasons so many left is the way the division leader treats the team. There is a limit to what anyone can tolerate. If they can leave they will.

The division leader will never leave. They are close to our SVP and have been at 3M for a very long time. The division leader is also someone who would likely not last six months at another company. 3M allows and even rewards behavior by senior leaders other companies would never allow. As many have stated on Thelayoff, HR ignores the behavior. This creates a situation where our talented employees have no option but to leave.

For the spouse of the 35 plus year employee, congrats on having a loyal and productive employee in the family.

I retired from the company after 35 plus years as well.

Perhaps the OP could have worded things differently, but this is far from being the 3M your spouse hired into. I believe he or she really was ragging on middle management and senior leadership destroying 3Ms culture. Your spouse should stay if he or she loves the job and the coworkers. Also keep working for the pension too.

But also, realize your spouse could be the next callous job cut. How would you feel if he or she lost their job just as they came up on the 92 number for retiree medical support? Many good people got axed just months before that date. Or even just before the 55 year old date for pension. Bear with people venting here who probably were as dedicated as your spouse but got slashed to save a few pennies for shareholders.

The 6 am to 6 pm dedication will be thrown onto the bonfire if the bell tolls for your spouse. And please tell him or her to not clap for the bosses at townhalls.

I agree that OP’s sensationalist comment is wrong.

There are plenty of good employees that are doing good work. Some are leaving but many remain. It can also matter which BG/Division you’re in.

There are opportunities elsewhere but the grass isn’t necessarily greener.

My spouse has been at 3m for 35+ years. He has worked his butt off for years and continues to do so. He leaves home at 6am and returns home at 6pm, often times without a break to even get lunch. In addition, he oftentimes spends weeknights at home on work conference calls for hours. So excuse me if I’m offended by the statement that all the “good” employees have left a long time ago. My spouse is a damn good employee and should be respected for his hard work and sacrifice, not ridiculed!

Tell me about it, mostly yes men and women, supreme a-s kisser's who never delivered on projects, sales targets and budgets when they were division level leaders let alone corporate level. No wonder our stock price and morale is circling the toilet bowl. Have worked with and been on calls with some of these so called leaders. Not an original thought or idea coming out of this bunch.

A few good ones are left waiting to see if things turn around after the spinoff.

The best case scenario is Roman the disaster retires early next year and someone takes the helm and manages to turn around the company like Culp at GE
