Thread regarding BP PLC layoffs

NEW FT ARTICLE ON BT CULTURE & BL

An excellent article has just been published by the Financial Times regarding the corporate culture at BP and how it ignored BL's conduct. It is entitled 'How BP's 'Sun King' Court Enabled the rise and fall of Bernard Looney.'

@2xbt+1pKEnpdp Kevin, it is interesting to hear from someone in your position. It's the second time that I have seen someone on here specifically refer to BL as having 'wandering hands'. I wonder if he made direct physical approaches to female staff members in the workplace. Sometimes, if it is unwelcome, the female is moved away or made to sign an NDA. I am convinced the true nature and extent of activities will be covered up. His treatment of the BP pensioners shows his real nature as opposed to his 'inclusive mental health advocate' facade. In a Sunday Times article just after he resigned (pushed), it said that he was already known as a 'swordsman' when he arrived at the London headquarters, and he the worked his way up through the women on each floor. How the Board thought appointing him was going to end well beggars belief.

I’ve been on the wrong end of bps inability to follow its own CoC. When I pointed out conflicts of interest they were dismissed, all because the inappropriate parties were ethnic minorities.

THEY ALL KNEW! As a former exec of T&S, BL’s wandering hands were well known. They need to absolve the board and reset the ExCo. It’s a complete embarrassment and moral failing. It’s one thing if they were outperforming their peers and this happened to support looking the other way, but they clearly have been underperforming so no excuses. The DEI ambition is a blatant violation of US law - hiring and making decisions based on gender, nationality, and s-xual preference. Who is going to kick off the class action lawsuit - I am in! And to have MA at the helm, who is the poster child for moral improprieties, it’s absolute madness.

Really calls to question why KD still has her job. People and Culture, huh? Both flops under your leadership. Well done, Kerry, well done.

@1ycp+1pKEnpdp Yours sounds like an excellent common sense plan for the future of the business. There should be a clear out from the Chairman downwards. BL's exec team should be ditched. According to the newspapers, BL has taken on a crisis management PR team. It would take consummate PR skills to whitewash this mess. I find it unbelievable that there was no succession planning in place. I am confident that BP will not allow the true story of what was going on to come out.

The press is starting to ask questions of the board. Removing Helge and at least half the ELT whilst installing a credible external is the only way bp can redirect and exit this farce with any credibility. Amazing how BL is still on LinkedIn as CEO.

A friend of mine who is has been in a few C suites says, if you want to imagine the character of a typical CEO think sociopath.

  • the identification of “hi-pots” early in their careers (by mid-30’s at most) is standard practice now. The anointed ones then have a different career path.
  • all majors are swiftly promoting women (I saw an IT manager become head of strategy for a major business unit). There is a cloud over most of them. what can we do? we middle aged men carry on and clean up the mess as best as we can.
  • about BL like shenanigans, yes that is uniquely BP, never heard of such stuff (probably was covered up well)

There is nothing unique about BP’s dysfunctions, maybe just the extreme they have taken it to.

The entire ELT is mired in this issue. Many of their hands are not clean in what was a wide scale pattern of using power for one’s own gratification.

@lrb+1pKEnpdp Can I draw on your experience then. Was there such relentless scr*wing at the other majors by the CEO, and, if so, was it overlooked? I am genuinely interested because I was angry when I saw Bob Dudley on tv deny the board had any knowledge of this. I am also annoyed at how BL treated the BP pensioners. I am not a retiree, but these people made the company. I found the FT article interesting because of the former executives who contributed. A very pertinent point was made that if a BP female has worked hard and done well, it may now look like she has done so through sleeping with BL. I think at the end of the investigation, BP will not be transparent about its findings. There is also a good article from Bloomberg saying that BP will just take a safe choice for succesor, rather than someone with imagination. Rant over. Have a great weekend everyone.

@pwi+1pKEnpdp How do you know what the culture of every other company is, unless you have worked for them all, which I somehow doubt.

I read the article, it’s no different a culture than any other large corporation today.

Except for the fact the other companies understand how #metoo has changed the world.

I apologise for the mistake in the title. It should, of course, read 'BP', not 'BT'. I don't know how to edit it on this particular system.
