If Xi and Hock Even Met

Unless he was sat right next to Xi at dinner, Hock Tan would have around 2 mins to explain his issues in an event like that over a brief introduction. Xi may just ignore it, forget the conversation or not pick it up with his advisors until he gets back. And by then it would be interesting to think that this was top of his agenda list after meetibg Biden for the first time in years. It would appear from the analysts that Xi will be focussing on short term economic wins for China first. It feels like a lot to pin hopes of this going through by next week on the past 24 hrs.

Xi will blink.
China needs foreign investment and causing this deal to fail will keep the foreign investors away.

This doesn't make sense. BC will not stop any deliveries into China if this deal fails. They are a supplier to others such as Apple, SuperMicro, etc.
And unless there are any major capital investments pending in China, there is no leverage on the BC side.
HT thought he could get Qualcomm done, mainly because he had a positive meeting in the Whitehouse. But he didn't. He clearly showed that he is not capable of navigating or influencing the politics in that deal.
And he may do so again this time.

Hock Tan did not get to sit with Xi Jinping. Here's the list of people who did:

Tim Cook, CEO of Apple

Gina Raimondo, U.S. Commerce Secretary

Nicholas Burns, U.S. Ambassador to China

Stephen Schwarzman, CEO of the Blackstone Group

Ray Dalio, founder of Bridgewater Associates

Peng Zhao, CEO of Citadel Securities

All Hock needed to do is get close enough to give Xi a 2 minute hand job and this deal is done.

Im simply amazed at how many M&A and geopolitical experts we have at this company. So many people with knowledge and experience in multibillion and multinational acquisitions, with so much deep and profound insights about it. Simply mind blowing how smart and insightful all these VMware tech heads are. I'm so glad they don't keep their opinions to themselves and instead come here to demonstrate their wealth of knowledge like the poster here.
