Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Least Ethical Place to Work Award goes to Dell

Marketing is dead, and has been for a while if you consider the constant rotating door of leadership. One VP handpicked folks they simply didn’t like to be cut in the August layoffs and then jumped ship to a role at AMD so they didn’t have to actually do the layoffs themselves and kept their hands clean. They kept low performers that agreed to show up in the office and that was literally the main criteria. In my experience, blatant misogyny, discrimination and bullying have been allowed to run rampant and unless you are married to the top VP (say alliances for example) your job is at risk. Better hope you kissed enough executive a$s because word on the street is more layoffs are coming and there is no one ‘safe’ department… Does anyone else find it weird that those laid off were predominantly remote workers and those who openly rated Tell Dell negatively? Guess it doesn’t matter when Dell will just buy another “great place to work” or “most ethical place to work” award for themselves that they’ll tout on LinkedIn - as if any single employee was asked. This is the most unethical company led by money-hungry executives who pat themselves on the back when they layoff thousands of hard working employees and give themselves a nice bonus at the end of the year. You’ll recall, they paid Chuck from Bain Consulting $45 million to join Dell and then leave within a year, after he recommended massive never ending layoffs. You have middle management using p-cards for personal vacations and their kids birthday parties but again, if they’re married to someone high up enough, they’ll be fine and won’t even be investigated. I was straight told (by that same coward of a VP that moved to AMD) that speaking with HR about a discrimination issue I had been subject to would hurt my career. It’s a bunch of ethically bankrupt leaders supporting themselves and themselves only. If you’re still there, start looking elsewhere immediately and save your dignity. Don’t say I didn’t warn ya ;)

Nothing about tell dell is anonymous. I know for a fact numerous folks who rated it negatively this year were targeted for layoffs. Sh---y but typical of Dell and I wish it was more well known.

I thought Tell Dell was anonymous

I tore them apart in tell Dell and got my layoff. They scare people into giving good scores. If it was truly anonymous and no pressure put on their scores would be well below average. They sold the results as good, it's like political spin. They know they are not liked and just don't care.

I watched as 7 of the very best in my department got let go while clueless underperformers who can barely tie their own shoes without a 10-question survey are left, patting themselves on the back. It’s a clique, a cult, tribalism, or whatever you want call it. It’s the blind leading the blind and I’m a bit jealous I didn’t get paid to get the F out myself.

Absolutely horrifying state of things in marketing right now. Top talent was all driven out or laid off and only a brainless clique made up of anyone kissing the most VP butt remains.
I feel sorry for sales and our customers. The good marketers tried really really hard to do good for the business but they were all abused and driven out by the MBA cost cutter club. It will take decades to recover the talent pool.

Pizza Friday's? We are lucky to have the paper towel and toilet paper refilled on Fridays in some of the buildings?

The Silos are many, engineering is totally destroyed, they have split them up into several organizations that don’t make sense, and are totally disconnected from each other. the services group is a joke, most just sit around watching movies or playing games while waiting for a “ticket” to do work. The management tells them to fudge the tickets to make it look like they work, so they can hire more people to sit around. The blind eye for sure is definitely going on there. There is so much disconnect, dishonesty and less trust in leadership than there ever was. The only ones who love Dell are the ones taking advantage of the company.

I’d take much of this persons post with a healthy pinch of salt. By any measure, Dell is not perfect and there is definitely a whiff of cult behaviour here, but it’s not as bad as you are describing. For example, there is absolutely no way that folks here are paying for their vacations and birthday parties using company P-Cards, that is a completely ludicrous statement.
You have beef with Dell, I get it, but isn’t it now time to move past it and get on with your life?

Kinda sour grapes bullsh-t, this happens at any company with pathic tribalism. Silos are rampant at Dell. Get rid of the silos (which is hard because of the idea culture doesn't matter) and lean towards more real accountability and maybe, just maybe you can make headway fixing some of the issues you mention. Since tribes won't give up power lots of imperfect layoffs are the default position leadership has to take. Another option is to sell pieces off to companies like Broadcon or HCL to deal with the SILOs and pathic tribes that seem to always evolve in big companies.

My boss has been ok at best, but I have to agree with most of this. It’s sad watching people I look up to be let go with no plan on how to handle the work they leave behind. It’s a sh-tshow

Morally bankrupt leaders leading inept managers will no doubt result in their demise. I’ll grab the popcorn and watch the place burn from my new corner office at a competitor!

I’m relieved someone is finally speaking up, and I hope this issue gets the media attention it deserves. This company is the least ethical I’ve ever encountered, and I can’t wait to find a new job. Honestly, I’d even take a pay cut to work somewhere that values compassion and respect for its employees. The managers here are terrible—some of the least inspiring people in the industry.

I had a very similar experience - this place is called Dell H3ll for a reason! The good thing is that lots of SAAS companies and VCs are looking for top talent and appear to be hiring Dell peeps left and right. Good luck to you! I’m still here but actively looking as is my leader and most of the people on my team. Morale is so low and doesn’t look like it will ever improve.
