Thread regarding BP PLC layoffs

Why so many bp employees?

I don’t want anyone to lose their job (especially me!) but why do we have such a high headcount compared to ExxonMobil and Chevron?

Our function was forces to hire 50% DEI (to be honest: migrants) They are untouchable. They only speak munkey. Since they were hired 6 months ago > 250 laptops and dozen of big screens disappreared.

I agree with almost everything you said. But I can’t imagine bp would want to let go of Gulf of Mexico, or whatever you want to call it. That’s probably the best upstream region in the company.

Imagine shifting to the Exxon business model of branded dealer. Sell off all gas stations and the employees. Then imagine a spinoff of Renewable, wind, solar, H2 business. Then imagine a spinoff of US. The remaining British company keeps everything else, unless Shell wants the non-UK upstream and LNG business. BP can keep it British upstream and refineries.

I recall the head count in the chocolate box company Thorntons that was purchased a few years ago keeps on giving...

The others have licensed gas stations, so they are someone else’s employees. We own and operate a lot of ours, and the backend production for goods and services that go into our stores (like bakeries and gas pump techs?). I saw somewhere that over half our employee count was related to gas stations and the service. That’s why the published headcount reduction feels bigger, because it is. It’s basically double for us.

there are ~3.3k digital employees in the company, this is before the cut of 1100

Way too many digital people for an oil company. Apparently north of 10k positions even after the cuts, which is nuts given the poor delivery record. Three digital SVP roles as well.

It’s because we have too many leaders. We could have a quarter of the F-level and above leaders. It would reduce headcount, cut costs and we’d run more efficiently. Just imagine an approval process that was 1/4 less complicated!
