Thread regarding Lowe's Cos. layoffs

Take Your $400 and shove it right up your…

I can’t believe the m0r0ns in this company did this AGAIN. Last year they sent out this exact same discretionary bonus and it tanked associate morale. But apparently the people at the top of our company are completely clueless.

Do you people truly not understand the message you’re sending out when you do this!? Is your wealth and privilege so complete that you’ve lost ALL perspective? It’s unbelievable. Here, let me explain it to you…

When you send more money to 4 ASMs than you do to the ENTIRE rest of the store, you’re making it painfully clear that they matter and everyone else doesn’t!!! How clueless are you? Seriously, I’m worried that you all have brain tumors. How divorced from reality can you get!?

And to make things even worse, you have the unmitigated gall to act ANNOYED that we don’t appreciate it!!!! How dare we not wag our tails like good little doggies when you’ve made it perfectly clear that 12 of us aren’t worth 1 ASM. You tossed pennies at us and we had the temerity to not act sufficiently grateful.

This is what people mean when they talk about the growing wealth gap in this country. We’re treated like peasants who should be on our knees in gratitude for scraps. $400 is basically nothing. I’ll wipe my a$$ and send it back to you.

I’m excited to spend my 5000!! I love Lowe’s!!
Had you stopped acting like cr--s in a bucket and worrying about what others are doing, perhaps you’d have time to educate yourself and be one to make the 5k

Also, each downvote gives me a belly laugh. Downvotes are a reflection on you and your lack of knowing how reality works.

I’ll be sure to buy something really special

400 bucks is 400 bucks....thank you.

As far as the wealth gap in this country, shine the light on all of these mf-ers from both sides of the aisle who take from lobbyists and do not live in the same world that the rest of us live in.

I’ve been with Lowe’s nearly 13 years. In the Niblock era we received NOTHING!!! Management has always received more regardless of the company or the time period. 400 dollars is 400 dollars. I’ll happily take it and all the other bonuses we have received under Marvin Ellison. If you don’t like your employment situation, then move on and quit whining !

Lowes employs approximately 300,000 hourly people. Take the average of $300.00 multiple that by the number of employee's you get $90,000,000 in bonus pay.
Lowes has a higher number of exempt vs. non-exempt.

Without getting into another peeing contest, I'll look at it this way.
The salaried employee's live and die by objective numbers. It's not 'how hard you tried' either you made the number or not. This is why Walmart store managers can now make up to $400,000. They have a very difficult time promoting and attracting people to that position. The amount of 'work life balance' and pressure is not even imageable. if you have not done it. They are responsible (like all retail organization) for everything and everyone, and of course driving the business.

Hourly workers drive the business everyday in the stores. What you do and how you do it are critical. You receive direction and are expected to follow through with it to drive the numbers in the store. Without quality workers your business will suffer. You environment and culture can and will be horrible. Ultimately salaried works will pay for this first as the 'sales' and all the other numbers go down hill. But you do not work under the same type of pressure has salaried workers do. You would not be separated as easily for not making numbers at year end.

Are they employees that worker harder than others? Of course in every position in any environment. A new CEO make take over a company, make major or minor changes. The stock market is up and that stock goes up. Was it the changes or the market?

Lowes runs thin on the floor vs. Depot for a reason. Lowes carries the DIY customer, larger isle's, the little house emblem, not as packed items on the shelves.
Depot catered the Pro Customer (thus Lowes attempting to cut into that) tighter isles, more items per square foot.

Stock Buy Backs.
Whenever there’s demand for a company’s shares, the price of the stock rises. When a company buys its own shares, it’s helping to increase the price for its stock by boosting demand, thereby creating value for all shareholders. So that begs the question, Have You invested in Lowes 401? If so you are a shareholder. Buybacks could also be a poor use of cash for a company, misleading the EPS (earnings per share). All companies do buy backs just research it and you may be amazed at what companies have spent.

“I want a little f*cking appreciation from people who fly into our stores every year and toss us what is effectively 5 minutes salary for them.

And just for sh!ts and giggles, I’d like to not have a simpering, pathetic little fool with a sixth grade vocabulary to log onto his computer to whine at me because he thinks he’s superior to the rest of us. That’s what I want.“

What a bunch of useless fluff. Give us a figure! How much of a bonus do you think would have been fair?

“Fairness? Decency? Tell us, who gets to define what is fair, and what is decent? Just hypothetically, answer this question—say Lowe’s gave a $10,000.00 bonus to every store employee, would that meet your definition for being ‘fair’ and ‘decent’?”

What kind of question is this? You really believe I want 10K? You are deluded enough to believe that I expect that kind of money? What I want is a bonus that doesn’t feel like an afterthought. I want a bonus that doesn’t feel like they were just giving us the lowest amount possible because they only really wanted to give the ASMs one and felt like they were obligated to give us something! I want a bonus that isn’t a fraction of the TENS OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS THAT MY STORE MANAGER GETS EVERY YEAR FOR SITTING HIS FAT A$$ IN HIS OFFICE ALL DAY PLAYING ON HIS PHONE WHILE THE REST OF THE HOURLY ASSOCIATES RUN THE BUSINESS FOR HIM!

THAT’S WHAT I WANT!!!

“Your “workers paradise” is never going to happen. Deal with it.“

Look at this statement above and the phrase in quotations. “Workers paradise”. That’s what this person thinks I want, although if you look at the post they are criticizing, you’ll not find that phrase. It’s theirs. They’re trying to frame me as some kind of communist because I want a modicum of fairness from the company we all work for. That’s how far we’ve fallen in this country. Wanting or expecting to be treated fairly or decently is sneered at as some kind of socialist manifesto. Basic decency, honesty and fairness are now considered luxuries and foolish expectations. We’re now all considered whiny, pathetic and useless when we expect the people we work for to put their money where their mouths are. Oh, they talk about how much they care, but if you want to be fairly compensated for your time and labor, then you’re waiting for a “workers paradise”.

“Also, if you think that the ASMs have a heavier workload than the hourly associates then you’re not paying attention. I’ve worked in several stores and the ASMs are the laziest people in the building and they’re always trying to find a way to work less. They come in late, go home early and take long lunches/dinners. The idea that the ASMs are working more or harder is a farce. The author of this comment is clearly an ASM who’s trying to justify the unjustifiable. If you’re going to make the argument that the ASMs deserve a bonus over 12X the hourly associates then you better come up with a better argument than “that’s just the way it is.” That may be the way corporate America works but it’s not anywhere near a fair system and I think you know it, otherwise you’d have come up with a better argument than this limp excuse.“

Totally agree, our ASMs are spending more and more time doing VERY little, and the time they now spend in back after our cash office was relocated upfront is... seemingly endless... losers.

“So, you want/expect a large bonus but you don’t want any more workload or responsibility than what comes with being an hourly employee in a retail store? The retail world ANYWHERE doesn’t work that way, folks. Either get into mgmt or find another career field. It’s really that simple. You don’t have to like it, but that’s how it is.”

This argument is a total cop out. Basically what this person is saying is that management in the stores always gets the bigger bonus because that’s the way it’s always been. It’s not a matter of whether they deserve it or not, it’s just been this way so shut up and accept it.

I want all the people who keep telling me things like “You should be grateful for any bonus at all.” to remember something.

In 2021, Lowes spent 9 BILLION in stock buybacks, 14 BILLION in 2022 and 15 BILLION in 2023. That BILLION folks. They couldn’t take .0001% of that money for one decent payback to the hourly associates who do 90% of the work in this d@mn company!? Really!? You couldn’t have spent 14.9 BILLION on stock buybacks instead of 15!? It would have made a that much of a difference? Especially since our stock price is down over the past six months!

So, the company COULD give us a decent bonus, they simply chose not to. Remember that the next time you get on your high horse to tell me that I’m lucky to have anything at all. The company is lucky they have associates who put up with this cr-p.

Good leaders value and reward their people. This is universally true. The best leaders, whether in the military, government or business will understand and recognize the worth of the people they lead. And they demonstrate it by what they do, not what they say. Talk is cheap as the saying goes.

So, what does this current situation say about the leaders of Lowe’s?

Well, it’s plainly obvious that they hold a very traditional view. They consider the people at the top as the people they value the most. The managers are valued above the average Joe who works in their stores. This is a common point of view. You see it in the military, government and almost all businesses. The people at the bottom come and go, but the people at the top are the “real” company.

Unfortunately for Lowe’s it also true that the best companies out there vary from this attitude. The companies with the most loyal associates, most innovative business practices and the most long term stability don’t do things like what just happened with the discretionary bonuses. They take a different approach. They emphasize all their employees and they take the view that spreading the wealth to everyone benefits not just those people but also coincidentally, the company too.

Motivated and happy employees = successful leading companies in the marketplace.

So, to put it bluntly, Lowe’s occupies that area of middling, average companies with unimaginative and dull leadership. They do all the same things they’ve always done and they always will because doing anything else just simply never occurs to them. They talk a lot about how much they value their people because as we’ve established, that’s the cheapest thing to do. But what they do is completely contrary to what they say and the associate reaction illustrates that their people know it.

In the end, this is all to be expected. The people at the top have been hired into their positions because they have a propensity for doing the safe and mundane. (That’s a long winded euphemism for: “They’re really not that bright no matter what school they went to and they do the safe thing because it’s the easiest.”) Expecting them to do anything else would require imagination and bravery and despite whatever they may tell you they want from you, they themselves simply don’t have it in them.

Accept the fact that your leaders aren’t anything special and that you’re working for a mediocre company. Don’t expect them to do anything exciting or innovative, you’ll be less disappointed when they do oblivious nonsense like this again.

The tenured associates should have received a cost of living increase at the same % rate that they raised the starting pay to. Most of these newer employees know nothing, many do next to nothing, some don't even bother showing up or leave early, yet they are the ones who basically got a pay increase.

I don’t think the people at the top understand how this affects the stores. The associates react to this by calling out more, they have less enthusiasm or care about their jobs and it creates an angry atmosphere inside the stores that poisons the entire working environment.

I personally heard at least four angry conversations inside my store about this subject. They were talking about how little $200 or $400 actually is after taxes, especially in this current economy. And most of the associates resent the ASMs already because they spend most of their day inside the offices doing very little.

The problem could have been avoided. Giving the ASMs $1000 or $2000 wouldn’t have gained much reaction. But comparatively, $5000 against $200 or $400 is a stark contrast. It just makes the hourly associates furious. The message to the hourly associates from the corporate leaders is this ; “We consider the success of our company to be because of the upper managers in the store, not our hourly associates.” And the hourly associates know that’s just not true. Can you blame them for being enraged?
