Thread regarding VMware layoffs

Anyone notice Kit Colbert's last day at VMware came and went a week ago?

That sure came and went quietly. No doubt, there are some people did not like him and are happy to seem him go, but although I never worked for him and so have no idea how he was as a leader to people reporting to him, I'm personally sorry to see him go. I though he did an amazing job presenting his vision at RADIO events and our public facing conferences. Having said that, who is the new CTO for VMware by Broadcom now, whether interim or permanent, Hock Tan?

No one would have noticed if the whole OCTO went away even before Broadcom took over.

I felt like he had great vision for what the company needed to do. Not sure how
much power he had to implement that vision though, sadly.

Don't you find it weird that a C-level exec has no power?
And that that lack of power was replicated throughout the company in all management?

It's almost as if the BOD & CEO doesn't really care about the company, and is happy enriching themselves.

I hate to break it to you, but you should realize, assuming you already
know this or possibly even run or are part of one of these, that
all co-workers everywhere most certainly have clique's/private clubs with a "secret"

Yes, I know.
The point being that vmware had no problem talking about how much of a caring place it was, while promoting people who actually lived a different ethos.

Want another one?

Ask about which C-level's spouse's company had a couple different no-bid contracts for supplying food / drinks to the company. Does that sound ethical?

Glad to see another ivory tower leech (Amanda) gtfo. What did it? I wonder if they asked her what she did here. I wonder if there was actually a performance plan invoked.

People have different coping mechanisms for dealing with emotions, anger frustrating situations like this. If for them stating who gives a flying f@#k that a very conspicuous member of a leadership team, which in their opinion were not transparent all through this poorly managed process and let them down, was let go, is such coping mechanism, not sure you are in any position to dictate how they display or manage their emotions, especially not on an anonymous platform like this. Yes loads were let go but doubt they had all the true state of hindsight info to make informed decisions on going about what they had to do, plan Bs etc that these leadership folks had,. So don't fault them for not having a Zen or Jedi-esque approach to emotional control. If you have mastered that, then good on you.

If you see him, ask him about the secret mailman mailing list he and a bunch of other
clique-esh early vmware employees were using to criticize many of their coworkers.

I hate to break it to you, but you should realize, assuming you already know this or possibly even run or are part of one of these, that all co-workers everywhere most certainly have clique's/private clubs with a "secret" way to talk sh-t about other co-workers, and VMware was/is no exception. When I joined VMware many years ago, I was "invited" to such a "club" in our corner of the world where all sorts of trash talk was shared about others not in the club. I wasn't completely shocked at its existence, although a little given VMware's EPIC2 values that it touted all the time, but there was so much distracting noise coming from it and it was so toxic and childish - not to mention a huge a waste of my time and intellect - that I just quietly dropped it. Su-ks that these things exist and that people feel the need to trash talk their colleagues with other colleagues. I can't figure out where they find the free time and extra energy to do so frankly. But whether they are archaic mailings lists, private channels other group chats on external messaging platforms or even to some extent this site, sadly all companies have them, some just to vent, others to just sow negativity. I find that all too often, the old adage that misery loves company holds true, but some people are just nasty and enjoy trash talking everyone.

There is no more CTO role. The office of the CTO ceased to exist as soon as Broadcom took over. Most of his former staff has either been laid off or moved into VCF in maintenance mode while everyone moves off of their codebase.

The two-month "wait" referred to here is the two-month period on payroll after being laid off, which ended last week. So he (along with thousands of others) was still on payroll and now is formally terminated and receiving their severance.

I get that some people here, including myself at least to some extend, are obviously anxious, unhappy and/or sad about recent events and the effects on them personally and the people they cared about, and so they may not care much about some of the previous VMware leadership that was let go, but some people here too often quickly jump to conclusions in terms of perceived motives or presumed/attributed emotions of others. Someone sharing his disappointment at only learning of Kit's departure from a recent LinkedIn post of his about this fact and also asking whether anyone knew who would be replacing him in terms of the leadership over the overall VMware technology portfolio should not have elicited the negative reaction that it did by some here, the implied accusation that they do not care about the others that were let go, or worse, stating "so what, who f'ing cares about Kit."

I would think that there will be someone else taking on Kit's previous role even if not ultimately with the designation of Chief Technology Officer, but asking who this might be is not unreasonable question to ask.

Also, I don't recall anyone sharing internally to all VMware employees the specifics of each region's labour requirements, only that they differed and so would the manner and timing of communications and actual termination dates by region.

Finally. We all knew caring, talented, dedicated, considerate and hard working employees (both as wonderful colleagues and good friends) that were either let go, some that were terminated right after the acquisition closed with severance but without any delays/wait periods, and some that were put on transition plan with numerous different termination dates depending on their roles, including some that were let go last week. But regardless of what you may feel you feel some of those folks deserved it or not, commenting about one of them, in this case Kit, does not negate or imply that they do not also care about or feel the same way about others. For someone to state "so what, who gives a f!#k" like he was nothing special, obviously thought otherwise, and I strongly disagree that Kit was nothing special, moreover, stating that is a downright nasty thing to say about anyone let alone someone who helped make VMware successful over two decades, something that Broadcom saw enough value in to drop $69B to acquire.

To some of those folks, consider you to take a chill pill and try practicing some mindfulness, otherwise, try seeking help with controlling your emotions or learn some anger management techniques.

I am still with Broadcom and in EMEA. This is not knowing California labour laws. This is being aware of what is happening at our company. All of our layed off coworkers and leaders were kept on the payroll until recently. As was communicated to everyone, regardless of where you live, VMware does not exist as a company in the states (and has just recently stopped existing here). It is a business unit. A business unit does not have C-levels.

If you worked within VMware you would know this. It's obvious you didn't; go away.

I'm guessing that you're both referring to the two-month wait period in California that I have heard from some US employees on this sight before? It may not have occurred to some of you here, but not all VMware employees lived or worked in California, let alone the US. Many of us worked for VMware and continue work for Broadcom out of many of the many countries that VMware and now Broadcom employs, so California's and/or US labour laws is obviously not top of mind for us, just like you would likely not be aware of the labour laws other respective countries, and so Yes, I work for VMware, and No, I did not know this nor is this even pertinent to what I shared, which is the fact that he's no longer with VMware by Broadcom and I'm sorry to hear that. I just saw that he posted his goodbye on LinkedIn, but nothing was announced about it anywhere, internally or elsewhere, which su-ks because I liked him. Also, curious to know who has taken on the CTO role given Kit's departure.
