Thread regarding Red Hat layoffs

The management should ask for volunteers

I know a few people who wouldn't mind leaving if severance is good enough. If they offered voluntary buyouts, they would probably jump at the opportunity and some of us who want to stay would be saved. This would be a win/win/win situation, for the company, those leaving, and those staying.

Management - "We ask you to voluntarily take this exit package and leave."

You - "But I don't volunteer for that."

Management - "Okay, now that we've politely asked you to leave, and you've refused, you are now considered a 'Trespasser'. We're calling the Police to have them forcibly remove you and charge you with 'Trespassing'."

You - "Wait! I thought we were having a normal two-way conversation!"

Management - "We were having a normal two-way conversation. We asked you to voluntarily take the package and exit the premises, or we'd have the Police forcibly remove you. Those were the only two ways that this conversation was going to go."

You - "Sounds like a one-way conversation to me."

Management - "Yes. Now follow us this one-way to the exit...."

Won't happen. I was at a hardware vendor with 100k employees. They did this and had so many people apply that they have do turn it off. They ended up laying off folks that they rejected for the voluntary separation a month later at the normal severance package.

Welcome to the official Tech World. Execs only way to drive growth is through reduction of US workforce. They don't know how to build a business, only appease a shareholder. Now with Big Tech in its standard layoff cycle, those that took above going rate pay will be the ones let go, not many hiring right now as they are laying off as well, and people over buying when they should have been saving.

Whenever a company won't disclose the package (as other tech companies a few months back) other than claiming it's "above market", you can rest assured the market used to benchmark against is the most dismal definition possible, not necessarily the tech companies you've been hearing about on the news. Ain't no one volunteering for what was offered unless they already have another offer in hand. That's for US associates, other countries may have fared better.

But how are they going to scare the rest of the associates into submission and productivity? :) I think the reponse made it clear, it's not about "trimming fat".
