Thread regarding Occidental Petroleum Corp. layoffs

Cuts coming...

To protect my job and anonymity .. I need to be generic.

I was asked to join a call this AM regarding something else non related. After the call, I unintionally stayed on a bit later as I was typing up a to do list for myself and overheard a call between two higher ups (i know both callers are execs based on the personal greeting exchanged where they used a name). I don't think the exec realized they were still logged on to our meeting that just ended. Mind you, I only heard one side of this call. There was clearly a quick conversation of modifying or exanding a list of upcoming layoffs. Then the meeting was disconnected by the exec.

I know its not much but I wanted to share. This was maybe 2 to 3 minutes of conversation overheard. So I don't know more than this.

Company staffed up to drill drill drill. We don’t have much now or next year. Does not make any sense.

There is has been and always will be “a list” of bad eggs. I have heard about it from other managers! When layoffs come they just get the list out and are ready!

I don't think you get it. The real comparison is someone passing on a rumour versus someone just making stuff up.

The amount of grief this person is given for relaying information is unbelievable when compared to the other post that talks about layoff rumors as well.

So someone who claims to have knowledge is belittled and the one just asking about a rumor is fueled with more rumor and speculation.

  1. Oxy's culture.

It must have taken you a long time to make up a story like that.

I was also on the same call. Did you overhear Ms. (omit for anonymity) accidentally bragging to her friend about how large my Johnson is? That was so embarrassing. I have true feelings and I’m tired of being treated like an emotionless tool.

That's it for 2 or 3 minute conversation - I smell BS
I dont think any manager would call you up unless the toilet seat was broken or the trash can needed to be emptied

@oau it's been there, to different degrees in different business units.

I've never seen another company of this size where each BU operates so differently that pulling KPIs is an artform.

Oxy must have changed a lot. It was never like this a decade ago.

@vco it isn't LAPC. LOXY has never been a team. Sure they make tacky "we are oxy" shirts, but the reality is Oxy is a product of acquisitions with laissez faire management; this has fostered a culture of fiefdoms across the company with people trying desperately to defend their own tiny territory while the bigger picture is lost.

There never was a team. Having LAPC to blame is probably the most united Oxy has ever been.

Makes sense. The earnings will come out in early November so I’d expect it before then. If no big sales they’ve got to show savings somewhere.

Unless there were a hundred people on the call don't you think they would know who you are? If this is true we would all have to be id–ts to know this was not coming. It would just be nice if we could get rid of everyone that does not want to be here. First, buy all LAPC that don't want to be here out. I am all for a LAPC VSP that gets the ones out that want to be out. That is the only way we are ever going to get back to being a team again. Bite the bullet and let them go with their big checks.
