Thread regarding Shell Oil layoffs

Got a Lower and now getting Reorged - What can I do?

Got rated a Lower this year. Unfortunately that was due to misunderstanding with immediate supervisor. I have learned so much from that, that I will do everything in my ability to make sure that doesn't come close to happening again. Ever. If I could repeat last year knowing what I know now, I would not have gotten a Lower, but I cannot change the past. It stings, deeply, but I accept that.

Here is the issue. I just found out that I will be subject to a re-org. I am concerned that having a Lower will make it very likely I will get laid off. Shell is my dream company. I wanted to retire from Shell. Since finding out about the Lower, it has awakened passion, drive, dedication, and perseverance.

I was hoping for at least three years to prove myself with Strong or Higher, but getting hit with a reorg with a fresh Lower. I very much want a long term career with this company. I have the energy and dedication. What do I need to do to make it happen?

My advice, just keep scrolling this board. It is mind numbing.

Do yourself a favor and start looking externally while you are still employed.

@nx I think one’s prospects would be better if they were an external hire into Shell for a specific niche area. If you are a specialist in a niche area, then you can possibly make more in another company that actually values technical expertise or pays individual contributors better. Shell does not value technical expertise, so they won’t pay the market rate. Life outside of Shell can be better.

@ka
I think that this is mostly correct. The thing is that other companies are generally looking for people to do jg5 and jg4 type work. There are a lot of posted positions for those. And they pay about the same for about the same work.
The issue is when you are a 1, 2, or 3 from Shell. They want you to do jg4 type work... so they pay for that level. There are fewer jobs out there that are equivalent to JG3 and higher, other corps are flatter organizations so they are few and far in between; plus they have a guy or gal already in the company who wants and deserves a promotion. By the way being from Shell isn't a strong plus. It means that you're an expert in a narrow range when they want generalists.

Be prepared to do jg4 work for Jg4 pay

@hz as long as you’re an individual contributor you can most likely find same or higher pay with other O&G companies. I left last year and went back to refining and am making more now than I was at Shell. I got a promotion to leave Shell doing the exact same thing.

Also being re-orged but have a Strong. I'm in a business that is being de-prioritized. I see the writing on the wall and am looking elsewhere. What companies in Houston have salaries and benefits on par or at least similar ballpark with Shell?

Wael will be forced to start making rapid and potentially chaotic initiatives as the market rewards Exxon type operational excellence or Chevron’s growth through acquisition. Shell needs big wins and simplification. Unless your on an asset or project the next 12 months will be a roller coaster

What can be said now, pal. Your opportunity to really make your mark has likely passed, and now you’re in the middle of a reorg trying to find a path to stay with Shell. I wish I could say it’ll all work out, but in situations like this, it usually doesn’t.

I had five straight years of “Strong,” with one “Exceptional” in the mix. It didn’t matter. I, along with many others who were well above the bar, were let go on the first pass. Performance helps — until it doesn’t.

If your rating is lower and you’re caught in a reorg, the odds just get tougher. That’s the hard truth.

At this point, all you can really do is walk out with your head held high. Leave knowing you did your job to the best of your ability. Keep your dignity, keep your self-respect, and don’t let a company decision define your worth.

Start looking externally. When your boss wants to get rid of you they do things like post your job and pretend it is 30% different so they can post it. Then they pick someone who isn't you for that position. About 4months after something like this happened to me and I was terminated my only regret was trying to stay in Shell. Save money, plan to look for a job while you're in the process.

Buddy you’re cooked. Don’t know anyone who got a lower or 0.7 that lasted.

Retire at Shell. The next 3 years are going to be chaos. Things will get tougher and the CEO will start showing his true authentic self.

There was a time when Shell only recruited directly from universities, high GPAs and sharp. Did they all achieve high flyer status? Not by any means, but the ocean liner can’t function without qualified crew at every post. The only 2 ways to get fired were stealing or some blatant moral failing.
The perpetual forced ranking and layoffs happening these days just poisons the company culture, morale and mission.

What kind of misunderstanding results into a lower? Either you were just sacrificed for a necessary Lower sacrifice since some orgs have mandatory quota to give out lowers or you just skip out some big details

Its not what you can do. Its what you already be caught of not doing. Accept it or leave those only options left. Accept it move on just like every other who didnt show results, production, let alone not license for your positions. You had years of chances to show it. Times up.

Might be genuine … look you need to know that a LM can understand a lower - but you can’t be a complete unknown to the decision makers and reorg time. You need to find out who is going to pencil in the names to the remaining boxes for your org.
