Thread regarding BP PLC layoffs

Promotion with no pay increase

Has anyone else been offered a higher title but no extra money? It feels strange to get more responsibility without a raise. I’m curious if this happens often or if I’m just unlucky.

@xq, are these seriously the base pay pre-bonus bands for Houston based company-wide technical expert types?

@m2 yep in reinvent this happened to me. Still sitting at same level from 2020 with just 3-4% COL raises. Cool!

They recently bumped me up a level “temporary” until end of year with more work but no salary increase or job title change.

@11c yes, and pay varies by job title, location, grade, entity....

@11a in the UK the grade bands have massive overlap, close to 50%.

Midpoint of H is around 75k gbp (in technology).

Pay ranges in technology are massively fu---d up, as it's a mish mash of formerly downstream and formerly upstream teams. Legacy downstream ones are paid significantly less.

@xq these look like bpx pay bands. If so, they are not going to be reflective of greater bp. Totally separate businesses, one just owns the other.

@wk if you watch the job postings there are engineering band ranges listed in some of the US postings. Denver bands are about $10k higher than other US locations.

If you got a promotion without a pay raise then your Line manager is sc--wing you. There are line managers that think they are being good managers by saving the company money by sc--wing their employees. I am a LM and I always use my entire salary increase budget. I never left any money on the table .

@cr I got 30% at reinvent with a grade bump to F

@cr at reinvent people were "promoted" into new roles without a corresponding grade/pay adjustment

At reinvent grade promotions were 7%. Have people received 10% bumps for a grade in the last 4 years?

The only correct response to that type of offer is, "I'll accept the higher title with higher pay."

Basic Logic 101.
Use it on them, and don't budge on your stance.
They want you for that role? OK fine, then PAY ME.
Accept nothing less than a reasonable raise, to accompany the added responsibilities/workload/etc. that they want to put on you with this new role.

Don't accept one iota of their B.S. gaslighting/trying to blow smoke up your @ss.
They can take it or leave it.

A move to the next grade typically comes with a 10% bump as standard

Been promoted in role, more money for same job, also taken team lead responsibilities in same grade, albeit got a better than average raise - was stepping stone to next grade so su-ked it up.

Happened to me twice. Once I just had to swallow it and the other time my boss said I was out of whack with the rest and I got a 17% increase in the new year... Ask your HR rep why that is the case. If you're relatively senior you should ask for their benchmarking info or you might have access to it yourself.

In truth post-reinvent salaries are all over the place as are grades for the same roles in different places... They've never sorted it out as it would cost them money which is totally unfair.

If you are female however you can try and compare your salary to a higher earning male peer. They would increase it then as they don't want to be seen as s-xist. I have a couple of examples of this.
