Thread regarding Medtronic Inc. layoffs

Protected PTO - Corporate cost savings

I was RIFd yesterday, and I see that severance only pays out unused regular PTO, not protected PTO.

They really pushed employees to NOT use protected PTO as it is meant for illness and other unintended absence. I had built up quite a bit of it, and used regular PTO almost always.

Now I’m thinking the reconfiguration of PTO was more about cost savings than anything else. I was not aware that protected PTO would be forfeited or I would have used that first and foremost.

Very sneaky move Medtronic.

@nm They won’t send you the legal documents for severance until after your last official day as an employee. I had to go through askHR to get the process started.

I also didn’t bother negotiating because I just wanted to sever ties and move on.

Does one not sign any severance paperwork until their 60 day period is over? Also curious if anyone has successfully negotiated better terms?

Who pushed you to not use the protected PTO? It was very clearly communicated in my group and in the FAQ that protected PTO wasn’t paid out as it was classified differently than ‘earned’

Literally, in my groups flow down of the change the first question was ‘is this so they don’t have to pay it out after a RIF’

If this was a shock to you, use this as a lesson to make sure you understand the policies and the implication of changes to policy.

Everything’s posted on the hr policy page. Inform yourself.

@cy yes, ‘Business update’ meeting invite sent by manager, and when you get on the call, the HR rep is there. Manager starts with the canned: “We are sorry to inform you……. Your position has been impacted.” Then HR person talks about your severance package.

How were SR employees told they were RIF’ed (HR, manager)?

Every year, for 8 years, I used my PTO time up first because I didn't want them to take it if I got laid off.

@a8 Until you are locked out of Workday the same day you get your RIF notice.

You should be able to change the type of PTO selected for previous PTO used in workday

The "Protected PTO" used to be called 'sick leave' up until they merged it with PTO around the time Lennon showed up. I don't think it is any NEW Medtronic is doing - they are just going back to the old model. And sure, it is probably all about money.

@a1 I don’t live in Alaska, California, Colorado, Illinois, Louisiana, Maine, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, New Mexico, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Virginia or Wyoming unfortunately, as those states all require payout of all PTO balances.

Fair warning to all- deplete your protected PTO balances first.

That move was 100% about cost savings for Medtronic. They didn't tell you that on purpose: they don't want to have to pay it out if you leave. A common, if messed up, trick a lot of corporations use. Always use "protected" PTO first, friends.
