Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

To go or not to go, that's the question

Wondering what is worse: Stay and do the job you don't like or leave, face reality, and risk for a better opportunity in a dry market.

No trolls please. Down-to-earth comments are welcome.

Left over a year ago. Making a little less money but SO much happier. Being miserable in a job in a toxic environment isn't worth any amount of money. What I found interesting is that you don't necessarily know how miserable you are until you move to a much better situation. Trust your gut!

Correction: want to handle more load? Deployment of additional resources behind load balancer at the click of a button

@nim same experience for me as well. Q provides deep technical challenges. Faang: can create a service with click a button;want to handle more load? - deployment Faang has good developers but average engineers.

Folks, Q is a commercial company that will chew you and sp-t you out when it thinks it is appropriate.

Don't get emotionally attached. Makes changes harder. For the people who are in love with Q, I am pretty sure it is not reciprocated. Wake up and realize that profits come before employees in ALL public companies.

Thank you very much for all the replies. Makes me feel I was not alone with those feelings.

I loved this company from the technical side, and really enjoyed the challenging work there. Meanwhile, I hated the mismanagement and the stock performance. Ended up leaving to one of the FAANG and it is exactly the opposite. I admire how my new place is managed, but I miss the deep technical work at Q.

I also liked Q, loved it in fact. But the company focus has long shifted away from innovation and into marketing, product management, partnerships, diversification, social media posting, none done particularly well. I am so drained that I consider everyday calling it quits. But leaving the package behind, for an old timer like me, is just financially stupid. If I was single, I would easily flip the bird and walk away. But with young family, old parents and mortgage, things are never that simple. Through multiple rounds of RIF I have waited for the package but it never comes. And I have seen multiple times people volunteer, getting no as an answer and then put on a death row with no execution date. It really su-ks and I don’t want to be there. I wish I could rest and vest but it has been the very opposite. Just more and more work with less and less people.

Keep in mind, as time goes on, things change. Maybe in November of 2023 you won’t be thrilled with your job responsibilities. Who knows what November of 2024 or 2025 will bring? Qualcomm has afforded me so many opportunities to learn and grow.

If you believe in Qualcomm, and value innovation, it may be worth it to stick it out.

If you’ve decided to leave, nothing can stop you. But, if the upcoming layoff rumors are true, it would be nice if you could leave with a stack of money.

Interviewing is rough though and I think the market is saturated with CS folks looking for work.

I set myself free once by taking a voluntary severance.

Why not both and take the best opportunity of the two. Engineers should always be networking and changing jobs, It's the worst part of the career but when you see trouble it generally pays off to get out of the way early, Speaking from my experience. Don't show loyalty because they will take advantage its part of the present structure of business but I think this will have to change back to the way it was in the 90s

If you are going to leave then leave with a since of urgency
