Thread regarding Teradata Corp. layoffs

An excellent environment to be in

I’ve been at Teradata for 7 years now, and I still feel lucky to come into the Rancho Bernardo office. The gym here is awesome, the cafeteria is way better than most places I’ve worked, and the natural light in the building just makes the day feel lighter. The people are the real difference though—helpful, down-to-earth, and always willing to share what they know.

Yeah, there have been some tough cuts, but that’s true almost everywhere these days. What I really like is that Teradata seems to be steering in the right direction with Vantage—focused on innovation and positioning us for the long run. I can see the vision, and it makes me hopeful I’ll still be here another 20 years.

@3d1 ok that's a fair point but have you ever considered viewing this as a long term play? SM doesn't want to see people laid off I know he's a good man and he is listening in on many projects. He's a good leader and I've worked at many other mega corps like TD

SM is a dud. Plain and simple. Under him revenue has gone backwards. Wasn't AI meant to be a booming market?

@3a7 I have supported numerous product lines and the culture on all of them has been excellent. What have I said that you'd consider to be nonsense? I'm not SM but I do support his leadership. I'm not just saying the office is nice I'm saying I value the culture here deeply

@OP You forgot to mention other positives

  • There's lots of elbow room in the office (because you're down to part of one building instead of filling all three the way you used to)
  • There's never a line at the cafeteria
  • There are lots of parking spaces
  • You don't have to remember nearly as many coworkers' names as you used to
  • Everyone is so friendly, they help you carry your personal items to your car when you're laid off
  • Customer complaints are way down (since most of them are now on Snowflake)
  • You never have to worry about missing management's expectations, you can be a success just by follow their example and failing at everything

@ne I get paid very well and I like my team so I'm not looking to leave anytime soon. The only case where I would seriously consider leaving teradata is if I had an offer for a FANNG. My team is important and has been unscathed so far. Also I'll say there's no way SM is here I'm sure he's got better things to do

"I'm sure he doesn't know" - me thinks how sure can they be? A silly, one liner comment is gone. No rhyme or reason. Worth a mention at least, IMHO.

Why do you think that folks here are all ex? Current employees, partner, customers, past employees turned customer frequent here. The last bunch are the difficult ones, my opinion.

"has a lot of dead wood " - and a few vantage cloud engineer/dev in trenches too. They "see nothing inherently wrong".

What really is the plan op? Got a job lined up and like a severance on your way out? Just ask your manager or skip. Volunteer your role, good chance they will make it happen. Happy for you.

Steve probably doesn’t know how to get on this site, but I’m sure his lackeys do.

@h9 not OP but you you really think Steve is on this forum with laid off teradata employees, hyping it up? I'm sure he doesn't know this place exists, maybe it might be a HR rep or recruiter but it doesn't read that way to me. Why not just make up fake Glassdoor reviews? Also I've been gone from TDC for 3 years or so and I didn't get to stay very long but I will say there did seem to be pockets of the org that could be good to with at, no idea how it is now though

@h9 again I'm not SM I'm just a dev on Vantage I saw that comment and got a chuckle myself. You know I'll say I don't approve of everything the ELT does but I mean I see nothing inherently wrong with SMs leadership. Teradata has a lot of dead wood and I get that they need to clean house. Does that make it a bad place to work? Maybe if you're in the wrong spot or want to coast but in general this is a great place to be, especially for an early career engineer.

Steve McMillan why do you ask to delete harmless comments? Someone tossed an idea that SM is OP, and that comment is gone? What is the matter with you? Go
live a private life and tend to your feelings or whatever.

Yes, F500 were customers of td, many are gone for good. While Steve and crew smiled at the camera, promised growth and cut FTE. Laughed their way to bank. Still laughing.

Steve McMillan, quit now. Take your name and picture with you.

OP takin’ the p!ss. It’s so bad at TDC, few can see the humor. Even in the darkest of times, a good laugh can help!

@ds I feel like there's not likely going to be more layoffs in at least the next year or two. Hiring is picking back up we're going back full on 2018 here, would be nice to have 3 doors down play in RB again. Teradata can't stop winning

I don’t recall even the most fervent employee calling Teradata’s culture amazing. So I have to assume this is an HR or Marketing shill.

Isn't floors 3 and 4 closed off in the RB office?

Does anyone even go into the RB office anymore?

@c5 well those are the people we can let go. Stop phoning it in, come onsite and build something great. I'm a cloud engineer on vantage this can be used at every F500. If we play our cards right Microsoft can acquire us

@cb I'm 30 years old and I think I can make it here, I'd leave on my own accord but I love it here so not any time soon. If you're in the right spot this is an amazing place to be and teradata has amazing cloud agnostic technologies

The only 'great' situation that remotely comes to mind is you are ready to retire and just hanging on for the sole purpose of receiving a package to help supplement your retirement. That's the only way this would be a great thing...

@bh 90% of employees at Teradata don' even live around the office anymore and the office is always empty, what ar you talking about?

@bh that what the ‘special’ cookies they’re laying out will do to you.

(that said, great company, great return to office, poor trolling)

@ab I'm not Steve or HR I'm just an engineer down in the trenches with everyone else. I'll say last 2 years have been rough but this place is going to turn around, I can feel it in the office. There's a special energy that you feel when coming back onsite, I feel like great companies don't phone it in from home. They work fully on-site, that's a hot take here but it is the right one.

I spoke with a systems engineer for a huge multinational corporation. He hadn’t even heard of Teradata. That is telling.
