‘Business Update’

I just got an unexpected teams meeting invite labeled ‘Business Update’ with just my manager and my manager’s manager. I’m getting laid off right? That’s what this is?

They just love to ruin the holiday season. They cannot wait and do it after the New Year begins.

I would respect the company more if the title of the email was more honest such as “The hangman wants to see you tomorrow morning”.

I got the Business Update meeting invite too: Boss and boss's boss. 30-minute window. Some corporate jibberish about after some careful review, position is being eliminated...then reading terms directly from document. Then time for questions.

HR rep was present but not listed in attendees list. Legally, HR must always be present for this.

I am sorry to hear that and sorry they use such ridiculous and obvious subterfuge. 6 staff in my dept got same message today. They will hire more execs of course...

@bje+1dK1wIfd you hit the nail on the head. A win win for both management and ultimately, shareholders. Give a person a dollar and pretty soon they'll want two dollars, and so it continues. They don't give a damn for those who are RIF'd. What a sad company!

You forgot the 3rd bullet - pay cost savings bonuses to executives.

I'm jealous. Legal never seems to get as hard. I'd volunteer if it were allowed.

What part of the business are you in? I remain hopeful, but my group rarely gets hit.

I think they called it business update too when I got laid off but we ALL knew it was coming so maybe they could have called it “ confirmation of what you all knew but we denied it until this second meeting”. Incidentally, when I originally started at TR, I had two job offers. I turned off down in favor of TR ( similar pay when factored in TR annual bonus) and my commute to TR office was shorter. After getting laid off, I’m now working at the other company that I had turned down for TR. after a year there, I am now making twice what i made at TR ( including bonus).

Look at it as a blessing. You are best off out of this place and will get a pay off as well.

Yes, I'm sorry to tell you. I got exactly the same two words on the e-mail invitation from my boss, to meet the next day in a room that I didn't recognize. When I went to investigate before the meeting, it was the HR office, so I knew. I think you can expect an HR person to be there with your managers. I know it's small consolation but at least it won't be a complete surprise. (Don't they know by now that employees have been onto "Business Update" for years?)
