Thread regarding Charles Schwab Corp. layoffs

Stay focused posts

Has anyone noticed the various "stay focused" comments that have been posted on this site recently? It feels like these types of comments are increasing and the message is the same. "You can only control what you can, so I just focus on my work", or something to that affect.

It's weird that all of sudden people go from anxious, negative, etc. to "well I'm just trying to stay focused".

This is all very suspicious and I'm curious about the responses to this post lol.

I see what you mean. I guess I just expect to hear a lot of the same things over and over and I'm sort of tuning it out.

"What you can control" is a typical response in this situation. That's fair.

"Just focus on work" is not. That sounds like corporate b.s. I find it highly improbable that a person who may be on the chopping block would feel or say this. Comments with this tacked on sound like paid social media wranglers.

Unless you're like @nxi+1nSeA8Jj , with that witty sarcasm. Lol

Not strange. "stay focused" is followed by "on what you can control". Blame google for uninspired advice like this because its used everywhere and every time anything major happens - circles of control, influence, concern. I heard it constantly during the pandemic and after having kids. The guidance counselor at my kid's school preaches it. You will hear it plenty from managers, etc., for a long as we're with Schwab.

Everyone feels unmotivated but some people will use this time to add to their qualifications, experience and network so they can land somewhere better. I plan to try to leverage this situation as much as I can because I genuinely have no other choice.

IMHO “stay focused” ahead of massive layoffs is like saying “cheer up” to a sad/depressed person - not helpful and exhibits zero understanding/empathy. Try to take some proactive measures that you can control - revise resume; update LinkedIn profile; research companies/jobs; connect with others who are “safe”; determine your salary requirements, etc. rather than wait until it happens. You don’t want to do a panic job hunt for anything and end up in the same position you’re in today (or worse). You can usually get a free month of LinkedIn premium which gives access to more job searching and prep resources. Take care!

Some of those posts are probably in good faith but I do firmly believe many are EC plants- maybe not EC themselves but people directed by them to provide a more “we love Schwab!” POV to anyone browsing this site. As for me, I’m doing what I can to help my immediate team and long term clients with whom I have a rapport but beyond that, F this place. There’s no more above & beyond from me, I’m not going out of my way unless it directly helps someone I personally care about on some level. For the most part anyone above my direct manager, who’s probably also on the chopping block, can go to he-l.

I don't think much of it. I'm just staying focused on what I can control and the clients.

@eqx+1nSeA8Jj - Exactly. This is Schwab's narrative. Hence, are they also posting here to try and sway emotions/opinions.

It’s not that mysterious. Rick said it on the summer update recently. My boss said it too, and it’s pretty much what I’ve always done anyway, so not strange at least to me.

They are realizing that they in fact cannot tank morale, keep it at rock bottom, and keep underpaying employees. Who saw that coming?
