Forced ranking eliminated after 20 years of visceral executive defense of a system that most tech companies abandoned 5-10 ago as a failure. Maybe the majority of employees are also right about a lot of other f---ed up Seagate policies that destroy trust and hurt company performance?

The corporate version of everyone gets a trophy.
"Pay for performance" is a joke at Seagate. There is no pay for performance to speak of other than a few thousand here or there extra. I get a 5 last year, and a 4 this year and my comp ratio is left under double digits under 1. F---ing joke. Don't work to hard, you get NOTHING. Those who are in top management get pay rewards for POOR performance.
what pay raise?
The new system seems a bit vague,is it a straight yes/no if goals/targets achieved. If it is that way then there will be even less people getting payrises.I think that each persons goal/target will probably be near impossible for that person to achieve. No goals achieved means no payrise.
The irony is we are all getting 5 as 'rewards' and that's all. You'll get RIF on 4's now. Watch out, folks. Be agile as you get what you wish for. LOL
In brief, eliminating forced ranking is the only way executives can reduce the antagonism of workers. They certainly can't stop the layoffs or give you a decent raise, so this is the sop to staff that they can afford.
You've got to ask yourself why upper management have done away with the forced ranking...it definately isnt for the benefit of employees so why would they change it afyer so long?
There has to be a reason so that it benefits seagate and upper management.
I dont trust seagate
Writing reviews was always easier. Manager dosen't write a review. Just left form in empty for all member. But he got a ticket to hawaii. He show the best way to survive in Seagate.
Ongoing feedback and coaching has to be kicked in, else the Forced Rankings will continue killing employee morale. It's a better alternative method for the moment.
Writing reviews easier now...just cut&paste: "I agree with you." everywhere & no score needed. Just hope manager is feeling generous during focal recommendation period.
Yeah, maybe the change is too late to matter. Rebuilding trust is much much harder than losing it. The next item to blow up is the tiered bonus system. Flat rate should be imposed so executives get 10% too, not 150% bonuses. Ridiculous!
Everything go well after another 20% cut in January and Closing Of DotHill. Start looking.
Better late than never. It's just like 6 sigma - maybe good for quality folks but not everyone.
May ex post here? One of closed site was add terrible idea on forced ranking. Most guys couldn't promoted. (only few could..) So smartest HR team given a job title as though promoted. Fake promotion! I'm really impressed for HR's kindness. That's sweet consolation enough to bring mental issue. Team collapsed quickly.
Forced ranking system s---s. System classify the employees like legitimate and bastard child. Bastard running to goal which called promotion, raise. But that's uncatchable. They catch a paper written "You fired!!".
This system existed for obedience training and cut down costs. Maybe it's quite suitable system for dying company.
The damage is done. Repairing the distrust and rancor will take years, and Seagate doesn't have years.
Tagging it #Rankandyank
