Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

AdBlock gone

So,
today I turned on my laptop and found out the AdBlock (or similar extensions) are gone from all browsers, since they've been blocked by IT admin.

The useless AskDell AR (Artificial Re--rd) first tells me to use the company approved "Privacy Badger", to later admit (after I've challenged it) that it can't block ads, but only tracking requests.

Now I'm stuck with a browser flooded with ads, which makes my life impossible, since I'm customer facing and often need to do web searches.

I'd be curious to know who's the mo--nic decision maker who approved banning extensions without providing an effective 1:1 replacement.
Probably just another SVP/President who spends the whole day just reading emails and looking at spreadsheets, and never launches a browser.

So frustrated to see a multinational full of decision makers who can't even tie their shoes.

@mk our team was forced to uninstall Firefox last year, so don't be surprised if it gets removed/blocked.

FYI Adblock still works fine on FireFox.

I switched over a couple months ago after Chrome finally disabled it permanently.

I've never had an issue with ads in my 8 years at Dell.

Going to be fun getting blinded by websites all week without dark mode, as if 7 hour zooms every day don'y hurt my eyes enough.
"oh well look away for 5 minutes a hour"

GL even getting 5 minutes to use the bathroom

Agreed. Missing the LastPass extension even more, and am bewildered that this was taken away in the name of security. Guess all my passwords will have to become “f***Dell2025” now. Super secure, thanks Dell!

Security by obscurity, those boomers a.k.a.VPs /CxO barely know how to use a bank card and have people beneath to do job for them.. so you are right, this decision is stupid.

@b8
The only announcement I got is they were going to remove software, not browser extensions.
Many announcements are made in a stupid way, that's directly to managers who are expected to cascade (so if they don't, we're not aware of it).
In any case, I'm not complaining about the choice: I'm saying it's id--t to remove an essential feature (nobody nowadays browsed the Internet without an ad blocker) without providing a valid alternative.

this policy was announced months ago. you should have submitted the extensions you wanted to use for approval. several of mine were approved with no issue

In support we are really struggling. About 2/3 of the tools we use are now blocked with no equivalent replacement. I'm told the problem is these tools were developed internally and our security ppl can't figure out how to validate them......
