US transfer question regarding pay

If I were to transfer from a higher cost location like NY to a lower one like Charlotte or Tampa , would my pay be lower for the exact same role? And has anyone ever transferred in the US and dealt with the HR paperwork? Seems like a headache

That was 5 years ago as you said, and would've been around Covid-time.

Citi has now had to face the music that it's Destitute and teetering on bankruptcy.

About 5 years ago I made a move from one of the highest cost regions in the entire country to another state where the COL was about 75% of where I came from. I got it in writing before I made the move that it would not impact my role or my salary and they honored that. It was like getting a 25% raise, very helpful.

I applied for a lateral move in C-level at a low cost location (I'm currently in a high cost location that has multiple offices/sites. I'm open to traveling to these other offices/sites. ). The Citi HR Recruiter asked me if I was willing to take at least a 15% pay cut to go to the low cost location in addition to paying for my own relocation expenses.

Of course I said NO. Even if Citi were willing to pay for the relocation expenses, I would STILL say NO.

The Citi HR Recruiter said Citi is hiring mostly in low cost locations (Getzeville/Buffalo, New York; Newark, Delaware; O'Fallon, Missouri; South Carolina, etc.).

I told the HR Recruiter that I understood they're just the messenger, but this is obviously a bad company policy and Not realistic since Citi is only hiring in the Boondocks where few if any qualified applicants/employees reside. This is like trying to find a needle in a haystack or trying to find a Software Engineer in Alaska instead of searching in New York City, San Fran, Los Angeles, Seattle, Chicago, Irving/Dallas TX, Boston).

Citi is obviously struggling financially despite what it tells Shareholders and the media. When an employer needs to nickel and dime employees and potential job applicants (Salaries, medical/pension benefits, etc.), and is Not realistic about the Low quality/calibre of employees it can get for peanuts salaries, the employer is obviously teetering on bankruptcy.

Good luck trying to find a car at bicycle prices. A co-worker / Hiring Manager once told me that when Citi forces him to hire only in the cheap low cost Boondocks locations (think low salaries and bonuses), quality and productivity suffers.

If he needs 10 skills/knowledge, he's luck if he can find someone with 50% of what he wants/needs. This also makes the hiring cycle longer because CIti and the hiring manager are searching for a needle in a haystack, and it's quite possible they may Not even find it. And so the Requisition Job Order can get closed after several months of finding nothing close to what they want/need.

Also, be aware that if you move to the Boondocks, in the event that you get Laidoff or Fired, you'll have difficulty finding a new job/employer because there are simply fewer employers in the Boondocks.

This happened to several people who accepted Citi's option of moving to a low cost location to keep their jobs instead of getting Laidoff. Not only did they take a pay cut (10% instead of 15%+), but they were ultimately Laidoff anyway the next year !!! They got Scr3wed and Bvtt Fvcked every which way by Citi !

Fl you're getting a pay cut. Charlotte may work out. They are trying to get people to transfer as they have to hire X ammount for their state subsidies.

Why would you even ask that question? It was widely reported in the news that during lockdowns Google offered employees to move to cheaper locations to work remotely by taking a pay cut? It does not make any sense for you to keep the same pay :D Is that an issue, if the locations is also cheaper?

I know people who transferred from NYC to Florida and their pay was reduced. I think about 10%-20%
