Can someone please explain why would anyone still be working for this company?

Why would you care? Obviously you are one of the people let go first. The remaining people are essential and are getting raises from your corpse.

You know it's likely gonna close eventually
but few people shop there and the checks aren't bouncing. If you are just working this for extra cash why should you care about anything else? Close to retirement , medical issues, unique family issues making transition difficult. Clearly those who remain are not here for a future career path. Those who remain are not all lazy or stupid.
The ones that are left are just bottom feeders.
It’s a paycheck until it isn’t.
The answer my friends is these people are lösers and this is the best they can do.
I enjoy the feeling of instability.
