@lkh Illegal crossings are at a three-year low. With Title 42 gone (defended in court by Republican state AG’s) Title 8 is the new default, which is a lot more strict.
Most of the people who are still coming in are walking up to CBP officers at legal crossings and claiming asylum, often with children. The US is legally obligated to process such claims.
At the southern border it is surprisingly very few and infrequent boxcar or hopper that ever gets set aside for customs. These trains come thru some sort of xray scanner and thats it. No dr-g sniffing dogs, no opening and inspecting. Back in the 90’s used to have a bunch of carmen who belonged to a notorious outlaw biker gang. They knew what was stashed on what car and someone was at the trains destination ready to pickup whatever that was. No one wanted to get on the bad side of those guys so no one said anything. There used to be some really neat custom motorcycles outside the carmens shanty.
If this suspension causes ANY delays, it will become an STB issue! Considering the UP does business on both borders, does pose an interesting problem for the UP. The article stated that the UP doesn't anticipate and delays from an operations perspective, but plans to appeal the decision. Ok if they don't plan on any operational delays, then why appeal the decision? I believe the UP knows damn well this will cause delays that they didn't plan on.
Kinda funny the government suspends UP’s customs certificate when the government can’t even regulate our own borders with influx of illegal immigrants
It has everything to do with regulatory compliance. I find it interesting the day after UP furloughs employees Uncle Sam decided te suspend their customs certification. This will definitely slow down traffic and push customers to other railroads and trucks…
This is a CBP program nothing to do with STB…
