I’m a 20+ year employee who received the NSI designation. My direct supervisor did not represent me in the meeting, it was done by her boss. My direct supervisor was unable to give any real context to the feedback that landed me in NSI. Now my supervisor’s boss is dodging my request for a meeting to gain some understanding of the extremely vague comments. Leaders were told they had to “own” the results. This sorry piece of sh!t can’t even man up and own his decision. He should retake that we are ExxonMobil leadership training again because he clearly did not get the message.

Former XOM here, survived PIP and then chose to leave anyway last year. Just wanted to share a couple of thoughts with you, hopefully that helps:
- At this point, understanding what happened to you ranking-wise is absolutely pointless and irrelevant, it was just your turn to be PIP'd and nothing will change whatever you do or whoever you talk to. Many others will feel safe now, but it will be their turn next year, or the following one, this is how XOM works now.
- It's hard, it hurts, one feels betrayed and victim of an injustice. Take some time to process all that and then move on, spending time trying to understand or feeling bitter is again, pointless, use your energy to leave XOM as soon as you can. What used to be a good workplace turned into a very toxic place to be at

A part of me thinks it's a lying supervisor, but on the other side, my supervisor seemed truly shocked when I called to inform her that I was accepting the severance and would be in to sign the paperwork... Of course, they have cut her people already from 8 people to 2, so I was leaving her with 1 person... Except they then put her over the other team within our department... I guess she got to claim she cut major costs by cutting 7 salaries?
We are all 1 bad year away from being assessed NSI. One medical / illness event; 1 family emergency situation; 1 cr---y supervisor; 1 shi**y job assignment ...
I'm 59 and hoping to hang on 1 more year.
I will advise that if you are not happy with your situation and under 42 YO, go find another job outside of O&G. The constant barrage of ongoing 8-10% in NSI will be demoralizing and induce immense stress on all of us and our families. Take charge and God bless.
Middle managers no longer serve a purpose and supervisors are too green for the role. This company is a mess.
One of the things this company does great is overwhelming us with middle management. They get an A+

The only thing they can say is the same ole “your performance relative to your peers“.. was lacking but they can provide any examples or substance to back that up.
This appears to be a common tactics employed since last year. The supervisor promises they will do everything they can for their valuable employee, then mysteriously the employee is represented by the manager in the big ranking meeting and the employee goes straight from the middle third and a positive vector to NSI or NI, the latter if HR wants to “balance” things this year, for fear of lawsuits. It’s one more thing that EM added last year to their panoply of cheap dirty tricks.
Easy to understand, you see your supervisor everyday, if he owns your nsi, would you possibly shoot him? Much easier if its his boss owning your nsi since you dont see his boss often, you then have nowhere to complaint and nobody to shoot.
All company tactics
Agree that your direct supervisor isn’t owning up. She either had no idea of your relative performance going into the ranking session, or had no idea how a ranking session was going to work.
However, it is really bad form if your immediate supervisor is left out of the ranking meeting. It means her managers think very little of her competencies (and probably the whole layer of Supervisors at her level). Why are they even supervisors? It sounds like they are just being asked to be puppets. So it probably is correct to be a little synergetic for your direct supervisor. It sounds like she has an awful job, with no authority, and may not be in a too-far different situation.
This is an easy situation to decipher. The boss of your boss had a crush on her. He saw you as an obstacle.

OP here. My direct Supervisor did all the prep work and positioned me as Excellent. Her boss decided to disregard the prepared input and put me down to NSI. No issue with my direct supervisor, just the a-ho-e above her.
Your supervisor’s boss was the the one who makes/made the decision on who is placed on a PIP. Your supervisor was just told this is who I picked and I will handle it.
This can happen with higher CLs where supervisor doesn’t represent you. Are you a 27 or higher?
First of all stop calling these useless id--ts "leaders". They are just d-mb managers. Second of all please understand that these managers never have and never will own the results and will happily throw anyone under the bus that doesnt fit their agenda.
Sounds like one of those VPs in UIS who hide behind the curtain, and whose supervisors are useless tools.

EMIT is the worst. The LT have no real options for executive roles outside of IT so they just trade jobs with each other and build their mini-empires. They would PIP their whole Houston teams if it meant they could hold onto “power”.

Ya, last year I was given the same type of no feedback. It was beyond frustrating and the manager could not own up to anything or say anything at all. After asking the manager multiple times to give me some feedback they said I was not competitive on a “relative basis” after they told me two weeks prior I had an excellent year and a lot of “ excellent” accomplishments. It’s a bunch of bs and cowards. At least a decent manager would say the process is sh---y and that’s what we landed on and apologize. … but they don’t say anything have no feedback and are almost inhumane. I think most of Us who got PIPed are much happier to have moved on. I moved on after passing the PIP … so I’m certain there’s a rainbow for you after this storm. Take care!
I’d suggest your direct supervisor is trying to pass the buck, hard to believe he/she had no input, if that’s the case why are they a supervisor?
