Thread regarding Sears layoffs

Why Do Some of You Want Kmart & Sears to Fail?

I don't get it. These are American treasures that are sadly going away very slowly.

Were you glad when Blockbuster went away?
Did you celebrate when Toys R Us went out of business?
Or even recently Fry's Electronics or a long time ago Montgomery Wards?

These are respectable long tenured companies we all grew up with so why be glad to see the end of Kresge's vision or Sears & Roebuck's empire committed to all of you. It's sad to see such a legacy slowly be destroyed, but even more heartbreaking that many of you are cheering it on.

I love Kmart.
I love Sears.
I wish more of you did as well, because when Kmart & Sears go... what's next?

How can you defend lambert when he constantly keeps running the company into the ground, no rewards for employees who have put yrs in company. Sears should stop hiring bad DM's and managers to run these store, but the damage is already done.

Go back and look up history. Since you're obviously a 12 year old child on this, let me tell you the history. I'll even provide proof since many of you kids want proof, and lack the cognitive ability to do your own research.

The year in 1993, Sears embarks on a billion dollar challenge- remake Sears. They call it the "softer side". It fails to draw in new business, even after Sears spends billions on it. By 1999 the massive failure of the campaign drives them to near bankruptcy.

The year is 1997, Kmart embarks on a billion dollar challenge- remake Kmart. They call it "Big Kmart". It fails to draw in new business, even after Kmart spends billions on it. In 2002, Kmart files for bankruptcy due to losing billions of dollars on the failed campaign.
Proof: https://money.cnn.com/2002/01/22/companies/kmart/

Kmart and Sears have been dead since the 90's due to their massive failure- Big Kmart was a massive failure, softer side was a massive failure. If both hadn't failed so miserably, then maybe, just maybe they'd have a fighting chance. So, stop acting like Kmart and Sears are alive, they've both been dead since the 90's, and I even provided newspaper links to prove they not only failed in the 90's with their failed campaigns, but that they are both failures already.

Listen to yourself. The end is near for both. Have you even been in either a Sears or Kmart in the last couple years? They’ve given up. The stores are devoid of products and barely have any name brands to speak of anymore. They both have an empty, hollow look and feel. They are not going to survive. I’m sure many people here love what Sears and Kmart once were many decades ago, and maybe up to as recently as 15-20 years ago. Those are the Sears and Kmart stores that should be remembered. Not the ones of the past decade that are clearly floundering. The online contingent that refuses to acknowledge a time before Eddie when Sears and Kmart were separate and had nothing to do which each other; that contingent is looking through some seriously distorted rose colored glasses that were prescribed by countless YouTube channels, because the Sears and Kmart stores of the past decade are nothing to remember. You should remember the Sears stores of a somewhat older time. The Kmart stores of an older time. Not this watered down by Eddie cr-p. Both brands need to be put out of their obvious misery.

I know of only one large chain that has successfully pulled off a return from a bankruptcy that closed all of its stores. Zayre re-emerged as TJ Maxx (The TJX Companies, who now also own Marshall's and other chains).

Kresge's vision and Sears commitment to us has been long gone. Simply keeping the brand name doesn't bring either of that back. It's all about the bottom line now days.

Closing thousands of stores to rebuild all of them must be the same reason malls are being torn down across the U.S. Can't wait until they're all reopened with new fixtures!

Oh yes, I agree. They will be building 3500 new stores by the end of the year. I saw in a previous thread that Montgomery Wards and Woolworths are going to do the same so it must be true!

Simple you build from the ground up all brand new. Some think it was the plan all along to get rid of old fixtures and buildings and I tend to agree with that. Watch all brand new Sears and Kmart stores be built now! Store Openings lists instead of Store Closing lists! It'll be beautiful!

I don't want them to fail. But if you've dropped from several thousand stores each to a total of 57 for both chains combined, you've already failed. How do you return to success from that point?

After Sears & Kmart are gone what's next you ask? They've been gone for most of us for years now already............and we still have had no problems with purchasing the things we need. It will be okay.

Aren't Kmarts the only place to buy a VCR now? I just picked up an 8-track player and got a free Starland Vocal Band 8-track for signing up as a SYW member.

like an echo in the forest the day will come back around as if nothing happened , yeah life goes on

There will be new American traditions that will make newer generations nostalgic, and the process will repeat.

Maybe so, but Kmarts are equally long in the tooth. When they are finally gone (good riddance), then the VCR analogies will be gone too.

I asked the same question a while back and most of the answers came from former employees and/or shareholders that got burned and just want to see the same thing happen to Eddie now. It’s not about the actual business or nostalgia. It’s all about getting back at Eddie for destroying what once was.
Although there’s the juicy fruit Flintstone guy. He’s got some kind of fe---h I can’t figure out.

I think the key phrase in your post is "respectable companies that we grew up with". That is no longer the case. They've both become a disgrace, and my kids aren't familiar with either brand so they're practically meaningless to the upcoming generation. Can't live in the past.

Wanting them to fail??? They already have, and are about done. We mourned long ago. Now we are just glad to see them finally being put out of their misery.

Yes, I was glad when Blockbuster when away. What was the point in their staying open, and taking up space? Keeping them open just to give me a warm fuzzy when I drove by would be a waste.

Because both Sears/Kmart have been on a downward trend since the 90s and there is basically no way of saving it now. With each brand having a fraction of the stores they both had at their peaks, it would be nice if we could just get some closure (no pun intended) at this point and see the few remaining stores gone. Neil Young said it best, It's better to burn out than to fade away.

People don't want it to fail it already has failed and has been so for years. They want it to disappear because it's not a good retailer it has poorly maintained stores with poor stock levels. Sometimes dying chain stores have to die not be on life support for a decade.

Because they are obsolete. Yes I am glad when all of those above closed. I was glad when VCR's were replaced by DVD players. I didn't cry when faxes were replaced by computers and emails. Life moves on. That's progress. I hate both these brands and celebrate their closures.

It's not wanting to fail so much as it's already crashed and burned and people enjoy watching a good trainwreck, especially when it's an arrogant incompetent bo-b like Eddie Lampert who's been speaking of what a genius he was the whole time.
