Thread regarding Whole Foods Market Inc. layoffs

23 cents - Labor Surplus

Apparently, a certain team of (8 Employees) got 23 cents each in their last labor surplus payout! This is what this company has come down to! Simply pathetic!

Working on the grocery team, we never get "gainsharing". Team leaders are sure getting those bonuses though. #wholefoodsmarket #TeamWFM

There's nothing wrong with the formula, as long as the targets don't constantly change, which they do.

Definitely a conditional diminishing benefit...and the formula the finance guys came up with helps this diminish...all money flows to wall street

To respond to the very first poster ("if you actually up well- whatever that means- and work hard"):

I've worked hard in this company, always on the floor on a team, never for admin (not to knock them, they have their own shit), but I can tell you from experience that it doesn't matter how hard you work. In specialty, whole body, and produce, every time we enjoy a healthy gain share, the next season it is driven down. The labor budget is cut because the finance team (who have very interestingly NEVER worked on a team in any store in any capacity) decide that any team that has a gainshare must have SOME KIND OF LAZY COMPONENT allowing their sales to eclipse their labor. How this reasoning stands I'll only rationalize it's to channel more money to the bottom line and not to the team busting their tails for it.

I know that gainsharing isn't a guarantee. What's embarrassing is that the company still touts it as a benefit. It SHOULD be touted as a CONDITIONAL, DIMINISHING benefit, because that's exactly what it is. Let's be real about this.

@6bsy: I'm glad you've enjoyed my posts. This is my last one for awhile because I think it's more interesting to kick back and watch the train derail. Time to go anonymous and lay back and just read. Rahodeb and his friends will have more insulting comments to hurl I'm sure. It's sorta like watching The Exorcist. Once you call the demons out they show their true colours.

I assure you I'm not trolling myself. While I presume the nasty comments directed toward hard working TMs are coming from management, no one can be sure. But if you managers and execs will quit pretending to be leaders and admit that you need to learn how to run a business, HEB probably has a place for you. In a few years you could be shift leader for the stock clerks. Or perhaps you can carry your butts back to Senegal or Ann Arbor or Houston or wherever...and take your ex-girlfriends and cousins with you. In case you haven't noticed, they aren't doing a very good job. The people who WERE doing a good job are the people you let go. Now about that $1B...the bill is coming due real soon. Will you be cutting the dividend or firing yourselves to save money?

And btw, management: Moving forward, it is what it is so do more with less and good luck making the payments on those mansions in East Cobb, Boca Raton and Potomac. If you sell now you can downsize to a condo in Delray or maybe something decent in Dunwoody. You can still change the world from there, and that way you won't be house poor and can still afford to fly to Costa Rica. With great love, Miami Steve.

Hey management: While you're pretending that you're changing the world, you're about to get a TKO once investors figure out you'll probably have to cut your dividend. You have a choice: Accept the takeunder offers that you've been getting from private equity that value the company for less than the current share price, or continue to pump this thing up as a "growth company" and hope that enough sheep will go along for the ride. We know your goal is to cash out and retire. The only question is will you be invited to any industry conferences or asked to write more books or do guest lectures at university business schools. Probably not. The whole "change the world, core values, team member happiness" shtick is a joke. A really old joke that no one believes any more, because it was never true in the first place. It was just a nice display with track lighting and a chalk sign.

The comments were richly deserved because that individual called hardworking people victimized by an exploitative gainsharing plan lazy. He or she started it and I ended it, and I stand by my statement. I'm defending hardworking team members who don't need someone to call them lazy and entitled for rightfully questioning a 23 cent gainsharing bonus. Had the individual explained how gainsharing can work or defended the practice without being insulting that would be a different matter, but he/she told others who questioned the 23 cent bonus to stop complaining, get on the team and (quote) "F--- off." I was thrilled to respond in kind. With great love, Miami Steve

When business owners want to really share profits, they use profit sharing not gainsharing. Gainsharing implies that it's the people at the bottom -- those with the least amount of say in how work is planned and organized -- are the ones most responsible. Execs know this is not true so they devised gainsharing which creates peer pressure to bust your butt for 23 cents. The way to overcome gainsharing is by SLOWING DOWN everywhere and taking extra good care of the customers' immediate needs. That will break their labor formulas but sales, return visits and items per cart will go up. The only downside is that you don't get your 23 cents. The upside is that it forces them to hire more people.

Gainsharing is a fraud. The labor targets keep changing -- it's like moving the goal posts then asking the kicker to hit that field goal from an ever-growing distance. The targets are always a joke in the first place but once they figure out they can "get the job done" with fewer people, then they change. Trouble is, the job ISN'T getting done. Quality suffers. Quality of service, the quality of appearance, the quality of the product. Our meat department used to pull big gainsharing bonuses, till eventually management figured out that they did it by making all the customers wait longer. As for the b* who called others lazy -- I have some advice. Educate yourself, then kindly shut the fk up, get our of our lives, and go back to hell where you came from. Moving forward, and with great love, Miami Steve

They have been trying to rig gainsharing to get rid of it wver since a.c. gallo came to the company..check the formula and how they project sales..

The labor targets are no where accurate. Grocery, customer service produce meat and seafood got no gainsharing for thanksgiving. While wholebody and specialty got about 300 each at my store

You have me mistaken for someone else...my gain share was over 300. But only because we don't have a team leader or buyers or any other leadership than myself. We are working ourselves sick and are still behind. Guests are seeing us and are worried some are just pissed. Our labor percent was slashed about a yr ago...and that was when a lot of the trouble started..workers became disheartened and started to wear out...after layoffs we are broken hearted and working our butts off not sure how much longer we can work at this labor percent..We are losing guests there is no mistake about it.

Dairy specialist here. I'm working harder than I ever did before. Volume of Sales increase, but my hours are cut. I can only do so much and whatever I don't get to doesn't get done, and the work continues to pile up. To make a statement calling me lazy is completely wrong. I work my ass off for low pay. You sir are an idiot

When it's one person doing the job of three with less hours to do that job, you can take that BS somewhere else. That's not lazy. That's being exploited and taken advantage of by leadership. Know the difference.

Why is the stock response here "you must be management?" Gain sharing is never promised , but earned.Sales can be increased if you actually did your job instead of finding ways to not do it. So many lazy and entitled team members hanging on ...go away please. TRUTH -another buzzword here...is in short supply by most posters here! Opinion mostly, but many outright lies . It is good to see a few posters here that are willing to tell their TRUTH about you lazy -yes lazy -team members who are just collecting pay with no effort! No..I am not management /leadership or a team leader /ATL ...just one who speaks TRUTH
