Thread regarding Fidelity Investments layoffs

Reverse Diversity

The concept of “reverse diversity” came to me during this chaotic RIF and ReOrg. Apart from architects and data scientists, it is the third problem Fidelity must fix.

If you have a team with 100% African Americans in tech, it’ll be odd. 100% African Americans in an NBA team, not odd. 100% whites in a tech team? Not diversified but also not odd. How do you rationalize the oddness of team diversity?

  • Merit. If a team is not diversified because the only talents is from one origin, it’s not odd.
  • Population. If a team composition (roughly) mirrors that of the population, it’s not odd. That’s why a 100% white team is not that odd in a white dominant society.

With this understanding, now think about the 100% Indians teams? (Of course I'm exaggerating to make a point but not far from reality). 100% Indian teams is such a commonplace in Fidelity tech that it’s not odd at all. There lies the problem.

  • Are all the Indians on the team “talents”? Certainly not! Most are average or below average hired by fellow Indians.
  • Are Indians the dominant ethnicity in America? Certainly not! A population minority dominates Fidelity tech.

Hence what we need is reverse diversity. Those 100% Indian teams need to be diluted to make them roughly mirror the population outside of Fidelity tech.

@kx , the fact is every IT related functions of every American company is occupied, I don't have a choice to to put up with it : (

It takes institutional and government actions to right the wrong.

I couldn't agree more. Being in the office makes me feel like I’m working for a company somewhere in Mumbai.

I used to work in the NC office (I quit) and the nightmares still haunt me till this day.

I’m a woman in my mid twenties and have faced borderline s-xual harassment from the “reverse-diversity men”. They would always stare at me!

I can’t eat lunch in a break room without a man at another table staring at me the whole time I ate.

Also, going to the gym is the worst! I would not only get stared at, but also followed! If you think it’s because of what I’m wearing, think again because I wear baggy T-shirts and basketball shorts. This one Indian guy would follow me as I moved to different areas of the gym. Imagine my surprise when I came out of the women’s locker to see he was waiting outside! I was also pregnant.

Yeah we have a lot of full Indian or 90% onshore Indian teams. I find it hard to believe no American's applied to those roles. Lol

During COVID, when we were all at home and unaware, overseas origin individuals brought in every one of their co-ethnics they possibly could.

This is very much worthy of an EEOC full blown Civil Rights job hiring discrimination investigation.

Most IT project teams are fully 100% In...n.

Let’s be honest here and skip DEI there are more not Americans than Americans working in the USA.

I actually heard that the reason they scaled back the DEI stuff was because of this. Too many companies facing lawsuits for reverse discrimination.

it's interesting how demographics shift over time;

when I joined years ago, we had a blend of African American, Hispanic, white, Asian

Abby took over and there was a huge push for female representation even without merit. Then, after the pandemic there was a dramatic increase from India, I'm not sure why but I suspect it was cost-related and one of the reasons our employee base grew so largely.

Today, there are only a handful of white employees on the entire floor. I've seen two Asians and 3 African Americans.

but despite rolling my eyes every time a colleague outvotes me and propose Indian cuisine for team dinners, I have to admit one thing— this must be what it feels like to be in the minority. and for that I appreciate getting a different perspective.
