Thread regarding IBM layoffs

RA notification timing

Does anyone know when your upline knows who will be RA'd? I hear there is another layoff supposedly end of December and was curious when management will know.

@1gv don't bother. It's a waste of time to try and find anything inside IBM once you have the RA notice from your manager. The odds are stacked against you because IBM Management wants you to be history, as far as they are concerned. Then your job moves insidiously to India of course. The company will be history too.

You really only have about a week after RA to find and secure new job. Then they start the off-boarding process pretty soon after that. The hiring manager also must justify why they couldn't find someone else not on the sh* t list.

@jz it wasn’t exactly brimming with talent in the U.S.

Functional MGR gets notification of exact ppl on the RA the day before. But technically they know RA's are coming but that list needs to be vetted in country with HR/legal.

@mn , During my career at IBM, Less than half of the managers I worked with had a technical background, the rest were "snake oil salesmen". The last one is a real white racist useless PoS.

@km

Everyone in my management chain have no idea what i do as they don’t know 1 line of effin code

My first line
What a b0z0 this woman is
A band 10
All she does is schedule meetings and constantly asks if I did my Think 40
I did Think 100 +
And monitors our Monday board
And brags that she can’t code
She’s probably making 175,000 and is a glorified admin

@km but, but, but I suc*ed up to my IBM director (CIO) who was over my IBM manager (CIO) in the hope that I would get a promotion to band 7. All I got was the lay off and my job went to India.

What did I do wrong ? Life suc*s.

@fd Perhaps there's one course you did not take - "How to S**k Up at IBM" (think loud slurping noises).

This is probably the one skill you're lacking - without which you're a prime target for RA, no matter how intelligent, diligent, dependable, and ethical you may be on the job.

I have seen managers at IBM keep young engineers with no real deliverables (no real work), convince them about taking all these useless education classes (not relevant to their current assignments) help their career moving forward.
I have seen young engineers spend countess hours learning IBM useless cloud classes (IBM cloud never amounted to anything) and IBM flavor of AI (watsonx, complete garbage ) ... .They use that excuse to put them on the chopping list when layoffs hit. The man excuse is save their own useless a*s. The most recent manager, I encountered used this tactic. He is a real useless PoS.

Looks yes. Sounds ... not so much. There are much better native Indian English speakers in tech that can communicate with an English-speaking audience. But they probably didn't step over the graves of thousands to get thier $25 million bonus either.

Yes IBM Marketing Comms has suffered most from the influx of ESL writers and editors. Unless IBM changes their official marketing material language to "AI Speak," their image will suffer even more than it already has. I tried my best to help IBM market their vaporware and proprietary cr-p for over a decade, but wish them nothing but ill will now. Probably won't be long.

@js TONS of jobs have been lost to AI. AI meaning Anonymous Indians not Artificial Intelligence.

100%. On my team, they replaced great writers and editors with newly hired people in India and Brazil (mainly India) with poor English. They made the copy worse than it was when they got it while IBM settled for producing garbage quality and useless management simply threw up their hands.

Corporate America is mostly dead. The white-collar jobs are dwindling at a fast pace because of AI. Going into trade is the best thing you can do, especially if you can start your own business and be your own boss.

Thank you for that

My late Grandfather spent his whole career with IBM and got a full pension .

I am not sure if I want to continue in Corporate America . I’m seriously considering going into a trade . I’m only 25 and I have cousins that are electricians. They make some seriously great money

@h8 in that case you have my sympathy. You sound young so while the timing is far from ideal, if this can start you on a path of switching companies every 3 years or so that will be the surest way to increasing your level and salary. I started at IBM back when loyalty and hard work and talent together meant something, but ended up in a dead-end role with increases that don't even come close to inflation, although it does have perks like 100% work from home and virtually politics-free. Overall, combined with careful investing, it has been okay, but being ready to move companies the moment they stop appreciating you is the best thing you can do for yourself. Best of luck!

@ga are you telling us that you had met your think 40 goal and then went on to put in an additional 60 hours including on nights and weekends?! That would be just re--rded - why the he-l would you not stop at maybe 41 hours or 42 hours for that measure of verisimilitude provided by not stopping exactly at 40?

@fd, if you did 100+ hours of think40, it means you are not doing the job, you are being paid for. The primary job is to work on products, customers pay for. That is what keeps the business going. The gimmicks like think40 is to encourage mediocrity and stupidity. Most of my career, I was a top performer who refused to play these silly games.
In short, if you had 100+ hours on think40, it means you are not doing your job.

@fd I have known several people who got Silver and Gold status and also won awards, like Growth, Culture, etc and still were RA'd. In fact some got the award a few weeks after being notified of being RA'd, talk about awkward during team meetings to mention the award and being RA'd at the same time lol

When people leave their record will be updated as to whether they may, or may not be rehired. So if you leave under a cloud there is no chance of being re-hired in the future. I expect this would not be unique to IBM.

Your first line gets notified a week or less in advance. On Thursday or Friday before the week of the RA they will get an email with the list of people and a link to a short training video and the script to read. IBM has this down to a science.

@fd Sorry, Think40 and the id--tic mess that is the watsonx "challenge" is the biggest joke since the Covid Plandemic/Scamdemic. All of that nonsense is for 1 reason. So the IBM empty suits "leadership" can go on CNN and CNBC etc and brag and tell the world that IBM has 4,000,000,000 AI experts etc. Or IBM provided 6,000,000,000,000 of free education. SMH.

@ec Perhaps a current or former IBM manager can weigh in. I have seen MANY people leave IBM and return. BUT I cannot say for sure how you are marked for return when you are RA'd or laid off. I would ASSUME and DOUBT your record is marked NEVER HIRE AGAIN but who knows. And OMG close the door on IBM and never look back and find a much better place. IBM has lost it's morale compass going from 1 of the world's greatest firms who cared DEEPLY about it's people under the 57 years of CEO leadership by TJ Watson Sr and Jr to now truly an out of control 6 alarm dumpster fire.

@e7 is Hindi, Marathi , Gujarati, Tamil or Malayalam the new mandatory language of communication inside IBM ? It's sure as heck ain't English any more. The memos form India are as incomprehensible as the IBM quarterly results.

@bw, it will be a miracle to find another job within IBM this late. Assuming, you are lucky, you will most likely have to through an interview process.

Post ID: @e0+1kav5506x

@bw Sorry, no good, gentle, way to say this. You are done at IBM. They no longer want or need you. Your job is either been eliminated or moved to a place in the world where IBM thinks they can get more for less. Enjoy your Thanksgiving and leave IBM on whatever terms are best for you; not IBM. IBM for a long time has been in decline and has been and will be a den of inequity and incompetence and irrelevance where they have lost their way and they are trying to ride what made them great in the 50s-60s-70s.
