16 Steps to Prepare for Layoffs

Getting Ready For Layoffs.... Here is a generic checklist of steps to take if you are about to be laid off. Not my list, it's a copy/paste from IBM's page here -it's from here @ScheGbT - some things are good to remember, so keep it handy... If you don't need it or do not like it - please just ignore it.

  1. What are the severance package details?

  2. Can I use personal holidays until I'm gone?

  3. What’s the policy about retirement and health plans during the last days at the company?

  4. Am I being let go with cause?

  5. Can I retire instead of being let go?

  6. Can I collect unemployment?

  7. Will I get my outstanding bonus (commissions if in sales)?

  8. What happens I chose not to sign agreement?

  9. Can I extend the time before I go another for x number of months (e.g., due to personal hardship)?

  10. Prepare and send goodbye email to colleagues.

  11. Check for Class Actions and/or prepare to file EEOC age discrimination suit?

  12. Post on thelayoff.com

  13. Save any HR related forms you can find

  14. Plan your reaction in case you are notified

  15. Keep your shoulders back and your chin high

  16. Go home to your family and begin again.

I would add the following things to do now, before you are laid off or quit:

  1. Print out your outlook contacts in case you want to get in touch with friends.

  2. Print out a copy of the SF retirement info.

  3. Print out the number for the benefits center.

  4. Take copies of any documentation relating to your performance (good or bad)

  5. If your health insurance is going to be in question, have your doctor stock you up on 90 day supplies of meds. COBRA is not an instantaneous process.

  6. If you have any MER left, spend it. The company does not bill you for the balance you would have paid for the remainder of the year.

  7. Remove any personal items from your work area well ahead of your end date.

  8. If you have someone that has been a big help to you, or that you respected, tell them.

  9. If you give your notice, give 2 weeks but be prepared to be done immediately as the company likes to send you on your way before you can become a liability to them.

Most of us who have been around awhile start taking our belongings before the axe drops. Maybe you should take some dog C*** in a brown paper bag and see if it is returned!

2 is a blast! "Can I use my holidays until I'm gone?" No. Alfredo here is going to escort you out of the building in front of all your colleagues once you hand us your company phone and card key. We will ship you your personal office items once your annoying and indecisive secretary bugs the sh--t out of a VP or Director enough to get approval to ship you back your favorite pen, personal calculator and family photo to you in a bankers box. #smoke_up_your_ass #integrity #respect
