Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

How does the Carmen seniority work at UP?

At NS your seniority is at your point. I can't leave Chattanooga and take my seniority to Birmingham.

I've heard that UP has a system wide seniority for Carmen.

UP doesn't want carmen, they want more derailments and destruction. And thats exactly what's been happening more of since they started getting rid of carmen.

There won't be any Carman except at major terminals. We went from 16 Carman to 5.

This is the way it works, UP has a bo--r for getting rid of jobs. Bottom line . Start looking for a different job. Thank me later for giving you a heads up. Don't say you didn't warned before hand.

UP will close most NS car shops. Before closing the shop, TCI (traveling car inspector) jobs will be posted. This is a good indicator that your shop will be closed. TCI jobs aren’t seniority based, they are right of selection jobs. Salary, On call 24/6 with one guaranteed day off.

Seniority does not protect you anymore. UP will do whatever they want. If they want you gone, you will be gone.

@OP I dont think you have to worry about loosing your senority- If Up is gonna have carmen, then im sure youll keep your job, especially if you have high senority. They will need the NS carmen to still do their jobs to keep up the health of rolling stock and to satisfy FRA requirements. The jobs might be managed different but you still will have it. They have to follow the contract and honor it. Theres not gonna be a boat load of Carmen coming in to bump you out is what im saying. Most people are settled in where they want to be and dont want to move east unless its a step in the ladder which all union jobs are not. (Pay is the same) Now if they get rid of carmen throughout the company, then i would worry- i dont see that happening. You will hear alot of talk and rumors of it because of the various shutdowns. Keep your eyes peeled on what UP is doing on a week to week basis. This is a good site to see up to date closures and layoffs. (but beware of the disgruntled busy bodys putting false trash to get people going)

You won't need to worry about seniority. There is no Carman left on the UP just Utility Scabs.....

@aa

If I can make it until next October I'll have my 20. I won't be doing the chasing the railroad after a furlough again when getting bad ordered is on the table.

I would be more worried about having a job once up takes over. JV has declared war on Carmen. They’re an endangered species on the UP.

UP is the same for Carmen seniority is only for your home point. If you transfer you go to the bottom of your new home point.
