Thread regarding Boeing Co. layoffs

Why are they so afraid to share information?

So, one of the engineering groups had an all hands meeting on staffing update yesterdat. Instead of sharing the slides and giving the actual numbers, the senior manager was just reading notes (a background picture of a Boeing airplane was on the screen the entire time) and throwing out rough percentages of people who are going to be affected by ILO. I mean he has the exact numbers of how many people every team has. What's with all the secrecy? Why not put up the real numbers and show it on the screen? What are they afraid of?

This => When you do, you start looking. Before the rush when people are laid off.

But even after they send out WARN notices, those affected still have 60 days at the company. So people who mean to do damage in retaliation would still be working and will have time to do bad things.

Two reasons

  1. If they told you too early, you could sabotage things. I've seen it in engineering and I have seen it on the shop floor. Things disappear, things break. So protection.
  1. They want to be in control. If they tell you there is a layoff to early or tell you the numbers, people leave on their own. You might ask why this is a bad thing. No severance right? Wrong, the people that leave won't be the slackers and the low end individuals, it will be the star performers that look elsewhere and will get other jobs, even in this market.

That's why they don't tell you. When you have been around a while and have been through a couple of these, you start to smell it months out (this one was not hard to smell at all, it just took a while). When you do, you start looking. Before the rush when people are laid off.

Blows my mind too. They’ve managed to have most people wondering what the future holds for a whole entire month and keep thanking us for being “resilient”.
