Thread regarding Truist Bank layoffs

Truist or stay put

With the published “denied” rumors around Citi acquisition of Truist, should I consider joining TFC in a new role or stay put at my current company?

I joined a little less than a year ago and think it’s a great time. While some pre-merger tribalism and loyalty may linger, Merger headaches for the most part seem to be in the past and there’s a lot of opportunity here now that the focus is shifting. Yes, AI is a risk anywhere, nothing unique about that here.

@vv - Totally accurate. My department is toxic as he-l. Most of the middle managers pick favorites and act passive-aggressive all the time. I’m basically just cashing checks until I can get out.

I wouldn’t recommend it. I’m a former Truist employee and started there well before the merger. Prior to the merger, it was a good place to work. Post merger, not at all. Most the good one’s with better options have already gotten out. Except for the overpaid micromanagers and those who haven’t been there long enough to know better, I can only think of two, maybe three people, that actually like it there. As others have already mentioned, the remaining employees are mostly just “doing time” and collecting a paycheck. I don’t think I’ve ever worked at a place where so many people have given up hope and just don’t care anymore.

If you come to Truist you’ll regret it. I guarantee it. The leadership is horrible with all the new additions from Wells and morale is as low as I’ve ever seen it. Can’t wait to give my notice.

@jr - I’m seeing the exact same thing across my team. A lot of people have mentally checked out because there’s little to no opportunity for real growth or advancement here. Like others have mentioned, many are simply holding on until some kind of event happens whether that’s a RIF or retirement so they can at least walk away with severance, pension.

Morale feels extremely low, and it’s hard to stay motivated when the company continues to reward employees with the same recycled performance review messaging, minimal merit increases, and underwhelming bonuses year after year. When employees don’t feel valued, you naturally end up with a culture where people only do what’s necessary to get by.

@f4 Correct. I'm on the younger side so I left last year. But to your point it feels like everyone remaining at TFC (across many depts/verticals) is just waiting for pension or retirement -- or as you described some 'event' because of a grandfathered in situation, etc.
So long story short to OP .. don't come to TFC. Unless you want to work with a bunch of people who are just 'riding it out' until their inevitable payout, etc. Pretty much no one is there long term/for growth except maybe IB.

You’re considering jumping into a boat with an Iceberg dead ahead. No rudder and can’t steer. Water is just above freezing. Closest rescue is four hours away. Life boats can carry half the people.

You do the math.

It’s banking, they all su-k and it is going to get worse with AI. Unless it’s a major salary increase, stay put, you’ll be jumping out of the frying pan into the fire. Let me say it loud for those in the back, ALL BANKS SU-K!

If you want to be miserable like the rest of us employees by all means join Truist. Most have one foot out the door or are waiting for a specific event such as Pension vesting to check out. Good luck in your search

You want to be on the acquiring side of a merger. Join Citi (if this is true, which I’d be shocked unless it’s a giveaway)
