DEI Events Budget and Support Slashed for 2024

DEI leadership has been told their budget for 2024 is being cut by nearly half. There are concerns from the Board of Trustees that too much on-campus space and time is being devoted to events not totally dedicated for the company's purpose. Plus, with more of a focus on regional meetings being held in-person, there are concerns about the campuses continuing to support DEI events.

ERGs are being briefed and are being told all events they are holding next year need to be pre-approved and there is a hard limit on how many can be held, in addition to a new requirement that a percentage of events be held outside the campus. There will also be date blackouts for DEI events that will be enforced.

Why do we need an organizational unit devoted to what amounts to a leadership problem? Hire better people with better values. If we already are - are we making up a problem that which doesn't exist?

If you are being required, bullied, or coerced to attend any of these DEI events notify the Ethics Resource office immediately. It is illegal under federal law to require any employee to attend these events or tell you it is part of your job. You can remain anonymous if you desire.

Exactly - the amount of time employees spend on everything outside of their actual day to day work is ludicrous. An example of waste!

So only part of this is true. The budget on DEI is staying the same, it is not being cut in half, just being allocated to different areas.

However, the ERG restrictions you mentioned are true, there was a concern about how many events the ERGs were hosting last year which averaged to one event every other day. The concern was not necessarily budget, but as you mentioned the ability for the physical campus to support that many events and also ensuring people are spending adequate time on their day jobs.

@hzy+1qsskWBj @jnw+1qsskWBj A friend of mine is on one of the ERG Governance Boards and told me how people are freaking out and HR is trying to spin it positively. The questioning came from the Board of Trustees, which does have some right-leaning people on it.

Letters to board members might finally be producing results. Good to see a 50% reduction but we can't move forward as a united company until it is 100% gone. John leaving this year will be a good step in that direction. He can take his DEI with him.
