Thread regarding Cengage layoffs

To lurking ET and Apollo members

IMHO, this is the worst configuration of the ET we’ve had in many years. This is how it appears to me.

CEO with no vision, no spine, talks out of both sides of his mouth, obsessed with status and wealth, ensures the worst of the worst get ahead and real talent and innovators go elsewhere.

COO is worst type of BS-first, ex consultant. Skills include meaningless PPTs, firing people, letting others figure out impact of firing people, and blaming others when 800th reorg he had led doesn’t work again.

CDO is slimy, happy to take credit for ideas of others, happy to backstab his peers, and has no meaningful knowledge of tech, AI, or the business. ChatGPT should be getting his bonus.

CFO is arrogant, hemorrhaged the best talent we had in Finance, sc--wed up the numbers, blamed people no longer here for his sc--wups.

CIO is huge downgrade that let best people go to erase the shadow of his infinitely superior predecessor while hiring his goofy buddies that know nothing.

Rest of ET has no product vision beyond “AI” and repackaging the same garbage into new formats with new brands. Seems like they are trying to push customers away.

Assume many will leave and cash out with an IPO if one happens.

Also assume this ET has burnt enough bridges with the well regarded, highly placed talent they mistreated and pushed out so that many of them will never work in this industry again.

Hey IPS. Let’s assume everything you wrote here is 100% accurate, then he obviously has failed as a True Leader. I’m certain you will say as a CEO he’s not involved in the day to day activity his Executive Team is tasked to manage. But they are a reflection of him. MH has perfected selling the vision but all of his hires on the Executive Team have performed like a group of high schoolers. They hire and promote based on pure nepotism! Can MH not see this ? is MH not guilty of allowing this toxic approach to exist in his vision. Look at the past 10 years ,,,,, all of the failures of his Executive Team. So many HR violations, and unscrupulous behaviors his Team does , should be enough for apollo to say enough is enough !! it’s time for MH to exit, before the IPO !

@q3 exactly! Cengage saying they are disrupting the market and an Ed tech company is disingenuous at best.

All publishers are greedy and will not invest in true tech or tech people who actually can build a stellar program. They refuse to pay Silicon Valley prices. But will spend 10s of millions on consulting firms that have zero clue what they are doing.

@OP @OP in terms of a clear eyed summary of the ET, this is pretty accurate. Reading through it I was struck by the fact most of these people weren't even here 2 years ago. MH executes them one by one and saves his own skin. The sad thing is they all think they have a shot at replacing him, which speaks to their illusions of granduer. The one you missed out on is the Head of HE.. He is on the ET but is probably one of the most sleazy transactional sc-m bag to ever hold the position. No integrity...shallow as he-l....makes decisions on the advice of his life coach (yep you read that right). Its a ship of fools heading for the rocks

@q3 sure you aren't a former employee, we all believe you. So many customers sit on the Cengage layoff site so they can post garbage like this.

I am not a former employee but related to a former employee- I am also a current Cengage Unlimited user. I can tell you right now, Cengage is only "on the leading edge" to itself. My College is ending its contract with Cengage and going with another company because the quality of your product is garbage. In the last week alone, I was given a set of instructions to work off of, and once I submitted the assignment- It graded me based off a different set of instructions than it gave me. Resulting in a false low grade. This is the SECOND time this semester alone that has happened. I watched Cengage over more than a decade, layoff entire departments, leaving 1-2 people, and then outsourcing the rest. The contract with cognizant is the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Cengages problems. I watched the remaining team scramble to fix the issues caused by the outsourced staff, and as a user now, I am on the receiving end of those issues.

Cengage isn't at the forefront of anything, they are forcing a shift to a worse format for learning, and then failing to deliver that which they promised. To their employees and their students.

Greetings,
You have an interesting perspective, and I enjoyed reading it. I would ask everyone lurking to put a pin in your post while I respectfully offer an opposing viewpoint.

The CEO did not join Cengage because it would be an easy task. He took it because it would be difficult. After years of working tirelessly to build a strong, industry-leading juggernaut, Cengage has become synonymous not only with quality learning materials but also with bleeding-edge, disruptive ed-tech initiatives. One need only look to the unmitigated success of Cengage Unlimited, an industry game-changer that disrupted an entire industry.

While it's true that Cengage fosters an amazing culture that spans across the globe, the Leadership Team has never lost sight of the importance of giving each team member the ability to effect change. From the newly hired intern to the veteran C-suiter, everyone has a voice that is valued and heard. This has been demonstrated most recently through a large investment in employee engagement technology, which is part of the reason Cengage has been named a Glassdoor Best Employer multiple years.

Change is not easy, and Leadership has been steadfast in its commitment to a long-term strategic plan that places a strong focus on diversity, ESG, and providing a top-notch platform for students and teachers alike. Every day, Cengage is redefining not only what education is, but also changing the way that students learn.

Let me be clear, Cengage is ahead of the curve on emerging technologies such as AI. We have entered an innovation blitzkrieg. Our valued resources are among the best and brightest in any industry and have, and will continue to, excel, doing more with less as strategic realignments, aided by new and exciting tools, push us further than ever before.

Full Stop!
